Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

"There won't be Memory settings in the future, because they make no sense on the PC, there is no disadvantage in running the core with maximum memory all the time." You're wrong, there are some games (surely Aladdin is one of these) that doesn't works if pc has too much free ram (using EMS that is mandatory on this game), and need to be u...

Re: a0486 Benchmark (180 DOS games)

i would love to one day be able to play some of the more popular DOS games (all the sierra stuff, maniac mansion, & secret of monkey island in particular) Most classic VGA (320x200) Sierra and Lucasfilm games mentioned already run perfectly well in the ao486 core. Early Sierra games tend to have issues on the faster 486 and Pentium CPUs anyway...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

The clock option doesn't help in some cases, Wing Commander or parts of the CD version of X-Wing now run much to fast. I don't think it is because of the general performance of the core, but because some parts of the CPU now work much faster than anything back in the day. Try to set 15mhz clock and reset core.. It will become very very slow and ma...

thorr wrote: Thu Jul 16, 2020 11:06 pm Wing Commander doesn't have a software throttle built in. It was too fast on newer computers back in the day. Back then, I felt it was perfect on my 386DX33 and too fast on 486 computers. There are slowdown programs that can be used in DOS to slow it down.
Keep using original Ao486 no cached core for games like this?

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

Just tried ao486_Cache3.zip core that bbond007 posted earlier - great speed improvement over official core - Doom runs a lot better! However, I'm getting no music from the Sound Blaster for some reason, same VHD has SB music with official core. Anyone else had this issue? Thanks Do you have SET BLASTER string in Autoexec.bat? Something like this :...

Re: Breakthrough for the ao486 core announced - Cache

However, if VGA will not gain VBE Bios compatibility and support, a lot of games will not works, like for example NFS, just tried yesterday..
It doen't works on 486 core while it's perfect on PCem and on VMWare Workstation too..
we really need an improvement on VGA support otherwise a very fast 486 cpu will be less useful

me too using AR6 like Fast Loader on auto connection when boot C64 core, it's twice faster than Jiffydos, don't block TAPs loading and i saw that is more compatible
