Re: Creating new Sega Game Gear ASIC from FPGA core?

It all seems possible, perhaps even likely(?) this will happen some day. In the latest Lu's retro source Mister news update.

FPGAs to ASICs is discussed:

Re: Creating new Sega Game Gear ASIC from FPGA core?

Yes, as I comprehend it, an over-simplifying explanation is that most (all?) chips originally started life as FPGAs and then were made into non-rewritable chips to make them cost-efficient for mass production. Think of the Atari Pokey IC or the Commodore 64 SID chips for example. Some full systems have been re-implemented onto one-chip designs like...

Creating new Sega Game Gear ASIC from FPGA core?

I have been fixated for a while on this video about a 'NEW' Sega Game Gear in 2021 by Macho Nacho: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgnbuYgp_oI For brevity sake, a summary: Mathijs Nilwik has completely reverse engineered the Sega Game Gear, creating custom new motherboard and both daughter-boards, with improvements (1 chip ASIC version). The only t...

THANK YOU AGAIN RYSHA! You are progressing very well at dethroning the NT Mini Noir's jailbreak core being the only obscure-console kid in town.

Re: Advanced cores for MiSTer future FPGA hardware

The last several responses are exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping for. Thank you! For me personally, I'm less likely to play past the mid-90s games as the disc based games can take up months to complete. Sometimes I make exceptions (Resident Evil 4, Mario Kart), but I only dabble in Dreamcast and OG Xbox due to the Sega connection. I'd be ...

Re: Advanced cores for MiSTer future FPGA hardware

I am hoping this stays a friendly, light-hearted discussion. It was intended as highly speculative and or wishful thinking of a hypothetical future of FPGA progression. I have no intention of creating undo stress or pressure on developers either. I am sure the majority of us here are incredibly thankful to every one of the core creators, and many o...

Advanced cores for MiSTer future FPGA hardware

Many of us know there are FPGAs more advanced than the DE10 NANO, but prohibitively expensive... for now. The latter is most important to keep in mind with this post. A hypothetical future I see once most of the wanted cores that fit on a DE10 Nano are done: Developers will be faster than the hardware prices become reasonable: I can see the possibi...

Re: MiSTer Multisystem - All-in-One System

Saw the latest video(s) and interviews and love the prototype news. I REALLY like the idea of the Mister being a console that can easily swap in and out of an arcade cabinet mount to some jamma extension unit.

Would love to see the Multisystem get detachable front squares with various OG controller ports.

Re: MiSTer Multisystem Handheld Prototype 'Handy'

@multisystem, Neil and the team - I suspect my viewpoint will be unpopular, but since my last comment, I've had days to reconsider. Now I think the controller accessibility isn't AS important as I had thought. With a Lynx or GameGear a player is stuck with the button layout there is. With the 'handy' (I like the idea of using that name), being a Mi...

Wow! I have always wanted to try that system when it was in magazines. Thank You for making this possible on the MiSTer even if to see what could have been. Maybe homebrew will appear one day.

Re: PSX Controller Advice

Looking at the neGcon now- I seem to remember seeing this on a shelf back in the day and thought it was odd but videos about it give it high praise. If true that only about 40 games were supported for it, it seems like a great potential controller to get universal support on MiSTer. Has that been implemented yet?

Re: PSX Controller Advice

Sorry, I re-read and see my wording was unintentionally ambiguous. I was/am aware of the OG controller with no sticks (hence using this and the PS Classic USB version), the 'analog' controller (pre-dual shock controller with sticks), and that most everyone goes dual shock and doesn't look back. I wasn't aware of the PS3 part [SIXAXIS not being a Du...

Love the Infocom and Magnetic Scrolls games. If this VHD ever gets a revision (or a separate VHD is made), I'd also suggest adding in a complete Level 9 collection.

A Good Future for CRTs? Open Source Replacement of Electronics

Start here: https://www.retrorgb.com/interview-with-open-source-crt-chassis-creator.html I haven't found much discussion after that interview, but I am quite excited by this. So arcade owners or those of us with many CRTs need only to have a good glass tube and neck board and the rest can be brand new? Fantastic! I could even see something like thi...

Re: PSX Controller Advice

It is admittedly strange to me getting used to people using the terms 'DS2' 3 4 & 5 instead of 'PS2' etc. and took me a bit to realize the Dual Shock intended moniker. I thought all PS controllers after the very first model were a given that they were Dual Shock, but I wasn't raised on the PS consoles so I'm no authority on the matter. :) Of co...

Re: An official MT32pi consolidated thread?

Thank you DevilHunterWolf for a perfect answer. It really helped a lot! So I can use my Pi 3B (non-plus) for now, though depending on the hat/case it may extend out a bit. It has 1gb of ram so I don't need a 4 for it if I so happened to like and want to enjoy Timbres of Heaven, yes? When I want a separate pi dedicated to the project, a Model 3A (sq...

Re: PSX A SmokeMonster/HTGD Type of Database/List?

Please forgive my ignorance but how does Redump already have 'that' covered? One can manually go through all titles to find duplicates, etc. Is there a function of Redump I may be unaware of that states which games to ignore if you don't know Japanese, or something pertaining to the OP? I can see where a GAME SERIES COLLECTION folder would be a hug...

Re: PSX Controller Advice

I think I hear the GENERAL consensus is that people prefer the dual shock but an interesting time capsule look would be the years before it existed- I imagine it is like people who played Sonic 1 but later in life had to get used to playing without the spin-dash of the sequels.

Re: PSX Controller Advice

Does anyone use the PS Classic USB version of the original? I never had a PS1 back in the day, but I heard the analog controller (first w. thumbsticks) and soon after the Dual Shock both didn't even arrive until about 1999?? If true, that detail surprises me! So do PSX veterans consider the dual shock the 'better' controller yet in the same breath ...

Re: MiSTer Multisystem Handheld Prototype 'Handy'

I hope to skirt past any drama and just reply to the OP. I agree with Kitrinx above but if possible, for me, there are too many handhelds in the market with the 4 button SNES action buttons and I'd love to see the Sega/ fighting games 6 action button layout and proper D-pad. I had a Lynx and GameGear back in the day and love the overall look of them.

An official MT32pi consolidated thread?

What do the admins here think of a place or category on the site dedicated to the MT32pi project? With MT32pi kits on the ko-fi site [Source RetroRGB], would it not be great to visualize all the separate MT32pi posts in one dedicated place on the site? I'm still learning about the project and don't know which place to piggyback on with my questions...

PSX A SmokeMonster/HTGD Type of Database/List?

Looking at the HTGD database lists, there is a PlayStation Redump Supplement.txt, but it looks like no one has started the gigantic task of creating a full on SMDB list yet? I have been working on this somewhat but am still testing some Japanese games for play-ability. Removing titles where Japanese language is required to play is a tedious process...

So far, this core is already amazing!!! I read others experienced the same surprise I did with Star Wars' super fast audio, and hilarious MK2 voices. bbond007,

I am researching migrating my install to an external HDD. My ScummVM directory is pretty large. Is there any way this [and Doom] would still work with the directories externally? I realize that these are 'different' as they run on the linux side. If not, I'll just keep a larger sd card in the Nano to accommodate ScummVM.
