Re: Donkey Kong Country save issue

I got into the habit of always soft rebooting the MiSTer before turning it off, as that involves opening the OSD and thus triggers the auto save.

Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?

No—it's about refresh rate. To cut a long story short, monitors with G-Sync and FreeSync monitors can change their refresh rates on the fly, which means they also support all sorts of oddball refresh rates. That makes it possible to run MiSTer cores close to (if not at) their original refresh rates, rather than forcing them to a true 60 Hz signal (...

Re: EIZO EV2460-BK 24" 60Hz display enough?

I'd recommend a monitor that supports G-Sync or FreeSync, as they give you more flexibility with the VSync settings.

Re: Non CEC HDMI lead / adapter

Like I said I can’t really remember the fine details of the post I saw but it does seem to make my experience better. It's fine that you can't remember, but it's important to not have misinformation floating around, unchallenged. Other people will stumble across this thread eventually. According to the user reviews, that adaptor doesn't disconnect...

Re: Non CEC HDMI lead / adapter

I could be mistaken, but I think you're conflating two separate issues. CEC is on pin 13, while 5 V is on pin 18. The adaptor/cable you're using may or may not be cutting both connections, but all the adaptors/cables I've looked at on Amazon seem to just cut the CEC connection.

Would you mind linking to the one you purchased?

Re: Automated saved on non system storage

I don't have a problem with the current system, but if it really is an issue, couldn't the cores be programmed to write a new, separate save file rather than overwriting the previous one (the old save could be automatically deleted after the new save is confirmed to be good)? That way, a corrupt save could be easily rolled back to the previous save...

.pal files are not supported on the NES core are they?
You can set a custom .pal file by renaming it to "boot3.rom" and setting the palette option to "custom": https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/NES_MiSTer

Re: I know this is such a rookie question... i just can't find an answer anywhere.

Try using:

Code: Select all

vsync_adjust = 1
I'd also suggest trying 1080p output to see if lag improves:

Code: Select all

video_mode = 8

Re: A case for 5x vertical crop in 1080p mode.

Well, just throwing this out there: 1080 / 5 = 216 lines of display area. This may be OK for Nintendo consoles (because of their enforced policies on game builds), but other cores - including PC Engine/Turbografx - often use significantly more lines of actual display than this. Quite often, the score and other important information is at the extre...

Re: I know this is such a rookie question... i just can't find an answer anywhere.

There are likely two sync cables (one for H-Sync, and one for V-Sync). You want the H-Sync one, but the colour coding varies in my experience. Try either cable and see if there's a difference.

As for your HDMI lag problem, it could be various things. Try posting a copy of the mister.ini you're using to start with.

I bought one like this and modified it slightly (added a resistor and moved the sync pin in the SCART connector). One could inject audio into the SCART connector, but I just ran a separate cable in my setup.

Re: Getting your HDMI2VGA Working with MiSTer

It's possible the adaptors you're using just aren't suitable for YPbPr, and that you need an external transcoder. Have you tried connecting to an RGB/VGA monitor just to make sure the RGB signal is OK?

Re: direct Mega Drive direct connection to GPIO (eg. M30 2.4ghz)?

The "USB" port SNAC uses is not a real USB port; it's simply using a USB 3.0 connector for convenience. It really is a serial port connected to the GPIO.

PAL at 100 Hz?

I've been testing "vsync_adjust=2" on my new TV (a Samsung Q80T), and it seems like PAL games are a no-go (at least on the NES core). NTSC games seem to work OK, at least with my limited testing so far. I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but would it be feasible for MiSTer to double the output frequency of PAL games to 100 Hz for...

There's also the option to use SMB shares on your PC or NAS instead. That's how I have storage configured for my MiSTer.

In the name of science, I just bought a Game Gear to test. Here's a photo of the screen during the intro for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 : BN4sOUB.png And here's a screenshot from MiSTer stretched to 640 × 480: mNLqZWm.png Measuring the screen with a ruler, I get 66 mm × 50 mm—an exact 4:3 ratio. Of course, it's debatable that 4:3 actually looks better, b...

Just by cropping the screen from this random image I found, I was getting 353 × 265, which is a 4:3 aspect ratio. Not the most scientific method, but the pixels are clearly not square.

Edit: I've since realized this image is obviously edited—and it's of a Game Gear Micro! Sorry!

How accurate are the sound effects in MAME? Old versions of MAME (and MAME 2003) use samples to get around the analogue circuitry, but modern versions have some kind of simulation/emulation going on.

Re: Possible to change size of picture on HDMI?

The addition of bezel/border options would be a way of solving this.

For now, can you set your MiSTer to output a lower resolution (like 480p) and set your TV's zoom to 1:1? That should result in a smaller picture in the middle of the screen.

Re: Would a Super Game Boy core/function be possible?

Is it really even appropriate for SGB functionality to be in the Game Boy core long-term? I know it's typical of Game Boy emulators to have it, but wouldn't it be be more accurate for the SGB functionality to be moved to the SNES core instead? After all, the Super Game Boy is really an add-on for the SNES (like the BS-X), and not a true Game Boy.

Re: Hiding Cores in Which I Am Not Interessted In?

You'd need to delete the cores to remove them from the menu, but then they'd just be reinstalled during the next update. The real solution would be for the authors of the update scripts to add filters for which cores to update and install.

Re: Questions About VGA to BNC Cable and RGB Output

It's just a passive cable—the cable itself doesn't care what type of signal you're putting through it. It sounds like your PVM is set to expect YPbPr, so that's why the colours are all wrong when you send an RGB signal to it (that, or there's some other error, like the SoG switch being set incorrectly). There shouldn't be any real quality differenc...

If it does come down to adding game-specific overrides, maybe it would be best to keep those contained in an XML file (or even a basic text file listing file hashes) to prevent the overrides from having to be coded into the cores themselves.
