Re: Homebrew NES port of the arcade version of Donkey Kong

Indeed, the rom with NES 2.0 header works now! I tried to run the rom with that exact header a year ago with no luck, but now it runs properly. Thanks! Mind sharing the hash for the working rom? MD5 or CRC CRC32: 05E7C02A MD5: 1C5CDB47316A34C570CBD27DE84F7EB9 You can patch the original rom yourself by changing its header in a hex editor or other N...

Yes, mapper 30 is supported. It should even support savestates in the next public release.

There was a change a month ago in MiSTer Main to take screenshots in scaler's resolution instead of raw resolution when using Win+PrtScn. To take a raw screenshot, now you have to press Win+LShift+PrtScn instead.

Re: Cannot get anything to work since the PSX rename

You need to install nightly version of Main_MiSter itself as it has multiple commits related to PS1 CD loading not yet rolled into an official release. Download the latest build from here , rename the file to "MiSTer" (no file extension) and place it in the root of your SD card, replacing the file already present. This should fix the nigh...

Retro Gaming Cables sells a good Analogue/MiSTer cable from the UK: https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/ana ... packapunch
I upgraded to it from an AMIGAstore Minimig cable when I encountered a TV which demanded pin 9 to function in RGB mode.

Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

Pong is an analog game represented digitally on MiSTer. One does not preclude the other. Pong is not analog, it just has a primitive transistor-transistor logic design lacking integrated circuits instead of using a microprocessor like many post-1975 arcade games. In fact Nolan Bushnell used to falsely claim back in the day that Magnavox Odyssey wa...

There's at least one MVS game I remember which uses non-standard controls (The Irritating Maze). Moving that game to the arcade core pile with dedicated control mapping would make accessing it easier.

I've been recently experimenting with games in .ATX format (accurate floppy dump with full data intact) from a romset sourced from Atari 8-bit Software Preservation Initiative. A couple of early Electronic Arts floppy releases like Archon and Pinball Construction set are marked there with "OS-B" postfix and indeed don't work on MiSTer's ...

Re: Mouse Support for Mega Drive and Mega CD Cores

Just tested My Paint on Sega CD with a USB mouse with two side buttons. Those buttons seem to mimic Right and Middle mouse buttons (B and C on gamepad). If there's no technical reason not to use side buttons, that would be indeed an elegant solution to assign the Start button on them.

Re: Mouse Support for Mega Drive and Mega CD Cores

These cores already have USB mouse support. You can enable it in core's Input menu. The hidden button under the mouse ball is mapped to the middle button. The only issue with implementation I can come up with is that Shanghai II in particular was built around the American Mega Mouse model with the Start button (Japanese/European mouses did not have...

Re: Load tapes on C64 Core

I believe the C64 core treats .t64 files as disks, not tapes. So if you use unmodified stock KERNAL you have to load those files with LOAD"*",8,1 and not Shift+RUN. The later initiates loading from Datassette, not the disk drive.

I brought up a while back that Skate or Die wasn't loading on the C64 core (would hang every time after the EA screen, just before the title screen) but it now works fine on every version I've tried, ORIGINAL or cracked. The original does? I have a .g64 image of the original disk and it gives up after several seconds. There's a .d64 image floating...

Re: Microcomputer Cores Feature Wishlist

Atari 8-bit core is not feature complete yet in my opinion as it is missing cassette tape image support. Another feature which would be welcome is true Atari 400/800 mode support. Currently the core operates internally only as a Atari 800 XL machine, even when selecting OS-A or OS-B system ROM. This breaks some software made with older models in mi...

Re: Thanks for all the work on the C64

G64 support is a great new feature. I wanted to play the original NTSC version of Master of the Lamps as I found most cracked versions imperfect in some ways, and they are usually based on PAL cassette releases. I converted a .nib image to .g64 and, lo and behold, it works perfectly on MiSTer!
Many thanks for recent updates.

Commodore 16 and Plus/4

I have a question to enthusiasts of Commodore's less popular machine. MiSTer's C16 core has an option to switch between two different computer models — Commodore 16 (expanded to 64K) and Commodore Plus/4 (64K by default). Is there any practical reason to switch between these two models, given that they feature the same amount of available memory? A...

What exactly does the Win key do in this core? I can't find the info on this. It makes taking screenshots with Win+PrtScr practically impossible as the graphics get all messed up while the Win key is held.

Interesting. Reading about it, the real high score cartridge does indeed save its name separately from the scores and can store results for multiple games. What took me by surprise is that, as far as I understand, this core saves high score data for games individually similar to regular save data in other cores. I guess high score cartridge informa...

Re: C64 core 05/04/2021: Not able to load custom boot.rom anymore

Rename boot.rom to anything else (e.g. "JiffyDOS.rom") and load it from hardware options menu. Latest release added an option to load KERNAL rom from the menu, allowing to store several different system roms instead of just a single boot.rom. A minor inconvenience is that rom loading prompt ignores "boot" files so it can't use e...

http://gw.eternal.dk/pal
This page lists a decent amount of European NES releases, detailing their internal timings, whether they were properly optimized or not. If the game is listed as 60hz for both game and music speed it means that it was not optimized and is probably identical to the American release.

The most recent. Previous version had a more stable picture (it was still heavily offset on the top but it would not flicker), but it had a different hard-to-explain issue, like some lines had color bleed. I may test the older version to more properly check what was wrong if needed.
