The constant sync'ing won't hurt the SD card since it's not really writing data to it each time it syncs. Syncing doesn't only protect against data loss during a power outage, but if you were to reset Mister, any unsaved data is lost. Most of the cert errors that come up are caused by the clock being off.
If the Mister was just powered on or fairly recently connected to the internet, may want to wait till you get the date/time on the Mister Bar on the OSD before attempting to do an update. Of course make sure the date/time is fairly accurate and not days or years off.
