Re: Is My MiSTer Dead?

The DE10 is unlikely to be broken, unless you've plugged something in wrong. It's very robust in normal use. The failure is likely something ancillary to the central board. Inadequate power supply is one of the more likely issues. Two amps can often be inadequate for a Mister stack. The general recommendation is a 5V4A supply. You can go bigger tha...

Re: Depricated.

The updater script really mangled my Top 300 image. The underlying filesystem doesn't have enough file entries to contain everything it has, and trying to update just messed things up horribly. It's so corrupt that if I mount the image on my server, I can't unmount it again. It seems to work, but the FAT version of fsck can't fix it, and Linux refu...

Re: Longterm ExFAT Reliability

exFAT is just not a terribly reliable filesystem. It has no protection whatsoever against power interruptions or bugs, and it's not native to Linux, really. Its only real strength is interoperability, since all current operating systems can read from and write to it. Using it as the basis of the Mister distro means that anyone can get it going and ...

Re: Samba Not Starting

The filesystem /var/lib/samba is a "tmpfs"... that's mean it's a RAM disk, and disappears after the system reboots. That's why your manual fix doesn't stick. The /etc/init.d/S91smb script is used to start Samba, and as part of its setup, should be creating /var/lib/samba/private. These commands are near the top part of mine: mkdir -p /var...

Re: Is the Noctua Fan Quiet? What Are Other Ways of Reducing Noise on MiSTer?

All Legacypixels I/O boards include a DE10 heatsink and a basic cooling fan at no additional cost. Should a fan fail prematurely, we will cheerfully replace it at no charge. All sleeve bearing fans fail prematurely. That's their nature. Nobody who cares about what they sell should be including them. Pretty much any dual ball bearing fan, which nor...

Re: LG 28MQ780-B Best Resolution Settings?

The DE-10's maximum resolution is 2048x1536. That's video_mode 13. I'd try both 12 and 13, to see which you like better.

Video_mode=14 is 2560x1440, but it's doubling the width of the horizontal pixels, so it's really 1280x1440. Video_mode=12 has more actual data, and 13 has the most pixels you can get at 1:1.

Re: Is the Noctua Fan Quiet? What Are Other Ways of Reducing Noise on MiSTer?

There is no stock fan. There's only what each individual vendor decides to use. The socket is for a 40x10mm fan, but what fan actually gets put there depends on who you buy it from. Legacypixels, for instance, uses lousy sleeve bearing fans, which are loud and will typically fail within a year or so. Mine didn't last five months.

The 6809 CPU had some nice facilities for multitasking, which weren't used by the base ROM. I'm pretty sure that's what NitroOS was about.

I've never used it, even in emulation, but I read about it somewhere, probably Wikipedia.

It doesn't matter what your experience is . Some DE-10s require active cooling to work correctly, full stop. Your opinion about this particular bit of physical reality is irrelevant . I am not the only person with these symptoms. See the thread about Armed Police Batrider not working. At least one other person there can't stably run that core witho...

Re: ELI5: Pixel Repetition

Neither mode 12 nor 14 will integer scale on a 4K TV, so even if you get a workable display, it might suck. It also might increase latency a bunch over a simple 1920x1080 signal. On a native 1440p screen, however, mode 12 is just about ideal. 1440p screens are cheap, and you can easily find models with low input lag. If you're stuck with a 1440p sc...

Re: ELI5: Pixel Repetition

AFAIK, it's only really useful for one mode, to drive 2560x1440. But it's not really doing that. Instead, what it's doing is doubling the time for each horizontal pixel, so that you end up with a 1280x1440 screen, but the monitor sees a 2560x1440 signal. If your monitor will accept the signal, 1920x1440 is a nonstandard 4:3 mode that will give you ...

There's a WheelDriverAkiko floppy image that should be in the Games/Amiga directory. It has some kind of driver for that, but I haven't set it up myself, so I can't be very specific.

I think it's installed on the MegaAGS image, if you need help seeing how it works.

Ooh, cool. I downloaded a bunch of MSX1 stuff when the new core came online, but from online searches, it looks like most of the genre-defining classics on the system were MSX2 or later. A really solid version of that core would be a lot of fun to play with.

Re: Is the Noctua Fan Quiet? What Are Other Ways of Reducing Noise on MiSTer?

Well, it hurts your wallet a little. I spent $15 on the 5V version of the Noctua fan, and four or five bucks on a pack of ten 22mm heatsinks, nine of which are still sitting in the bag. :) But it's very quiet. I can't hear it unless the room is dead silent and I pay very close attention. The sleeve bearing fan the I/O board came with was noisy.

Re: MT32-Pi Works, but Does Not Turn On OLED Is Not Detected!

Ah, okay, I missed that.

Being really hot can be a sign of not getting enough voltage; the system then pulls more amps to try to compensate, and amperage is what makes things get hot.

Using a separate power supply for the Pi, and turning off the power switch on the hat so the current doesn't flow backward, would be a useful experiment.

250 GBP? I know the pound has dropped a lot, but that still seems way high. It's still showing at 223 dollars on the main site, and their shipping is kind of pricey, so I would expect to be able to get one delivered at about 250 dollars. In the US, talking to a rep and getting them to ship from the US office will save you the customs fees. There mi...

How do you know that your MT32-pi works?

This is an excellent question.

OP: Continuing to insist that the MT32-Pi works, while also complaining it doesn't work, seems, er, counterproductive.

As others have suggested, the power supply is a likely source of the problem.

Re: Is the Noctua Fan Quiet? What Are Other Ways of Reducing Noise on MiSTer?

I just had to replace my old fan, which failed at less than six months of age. I used a Noctua as a replacement, and it's working fine. People saying you don't need a fan are wrong in many cases. I had multiple arcade cores crashing when I was heatsink-only, and the bad fan on the digital I/O board was nearly painful to touch. Now that the new fan...

I probably wouldn't use that as a general configuration, however; 570K free of lower memory is quite bad. You typically want over 600K free. IIRC, there were one or two games that required something like 608K, though I can't remember which they were after so long. I'd really expect that game to work with a clean HIMEM/EMM386 setup, rather than need...

AFAIK, Linux is the only OS that will understand symlinks on an exFAT filesystem. If you're trying to interoperate with Windows, using favorites.sh to create "mgl" files is a better idea. MGLs are a Mister-specific format that have information inside about what core should be launched and what ROM should be loaded. If only Linux systems w...

Ah, I always avoid doing that because not all cores clear their memory correctly. A warm reboot has seemed more reliable to me, and a cold reboot almost always works. I sometimes have to do a hard poweroff after update_all replaces the Mister binary, however.
