Re: N64 Core Development Ends
I ust wanted to throw out here that after some testing last night, I would recommand for people who experience crashes on RE2 and Conker to use the overclock DDR3 RAM script, yesterday I was wondering if I got lucky since I never had any crashes on RE2 while using the script in the past month. So I decided to not use it last night and RE 2 crashed...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Thanks! It's nice to have options like this, I'm all for this kind of tinkering :p I wonder if any of your discoveries could be applied to fix antonio's villena 128mb 4 cells memory incompatibility by allowing to tweak the SDRam timing or overclock it to go around its limitation. I have bought another one a months ago, but I don't like e-waste ^^....

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Oh boy Ok so I looked into my og file I was using up until now and it was set to 1200000 while the name was 1.3ghz so that explain why I was having a significant performance boost still compare to stock XD Glad I'm not crazy. Using the loading of N64 Resident Evil 2 USA as a reference benchmark: Stock= 35 seconds memory 1050+cpu at 1.2ghz= 31 seco...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
So which frequency would get apply then if it's set at 1300000? Is the 1400000 number connected to the right value? Since you just told me this I tried it and it didn't immediately crashed I forget if it sets it to 1200000 or doesn't do anything haha. No it isn't connected to anything. You can try 2000000 and it won't crash. Oh boy Ok so I looked ...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Nope, I updated the kernel way back when you did the beta, but since then I just let the main update do its thing. Why it shouldn't work? Is it possible that it actually doesn't apply without any error message? It would be funny, me believing it's running while it's actually not XD Yeah it will probably apply without any error message. The list of...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Thanks! 1050 on memory and 1.3ghz on the CPU is stable for me. 1100 on the memory crashes right away at both 1.2ghz or 1.3ghz 1.3 GHz actually shouldn't work, are you using a custom kernel? Nope, I updated the kernel way back when you did the beta, but since then I just let the main update do its thing. Why it shouldn't work? Is it possible that i...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
You can just copy the following lines near the top of the memory overclock file, after #!/bin/bash
echo "1200000" > "/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq"
echo "Max CPU frequency set to 1200 MHz"

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Very nice to see! Any instability to report? Do you have a simple script to run for these? I've been running the 1300 OC pretty consistantly and it has been very stable for me. (Antonio's setup) See https://github.com/coolbho3k/MiSTer-Overclock-Scripts/blob/master/mister_mem_oc.sh Change the TARGET_KHZ line in mister_mem_oc.sh before copying it ov...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
I don't think the N64 core will need this anymore as it's coming along great but there's some fascinating improvements from overclocking memory in Robert's DDR3 test core. There are across the board improvements to latency. There is a great improvement to bandwidth on non-burst reads. There is barely any improvement to bandwidth on burst reads. At ...

I've also been exploring tweaking some of the DDR3 registers in a way that isn't overclocking but might improve things for core developers.

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Robert did some initial tests in the MiSTer Discord with some of these tweaks. Overclocking the RAM did make a difference, the other tweaks not so much, including changing CL. One of the tweaks made the performance worse. One of the other tweaks didn't make a difference in the benchmark - I think it might actually be prioritizing FPGA memory access...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
One more register that may helpful: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/programmable/hps/cyclone-v/hps.html#sfo1411577375739.html This allows you to configure the memory ports to disable "auto-precharge" which improves "highly random accesses" - maybe this could improve latency at the cost of throughput for cores? devmem 0xF...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Poking around some other settings. One of the complaints about DDR3 for cores is that the latency can be inconsistent due to contention with the HPS/Linux side of things. But it seems the priority of memory access can be customized. By default it seems the memory controller prioritizes HPS and FPGA memory access equally. These tweaks are not overcl...

I also found where to adjust timings: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/programmable/hps/cyclone-v/hps.html#sfo1411577368421.html Ie. to set CL latency from 7 to 6 the command is devmem 0xFFC25004 w 0x783CCC07 Although timings can also be adjusted in u-boot here. https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/u-boot_MiSTer/blob/MiSTer/board/terasic/de10-nan...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
I messaged Robert and he's now aware of it and will keep it mind as he's developing the N64 core :) Actually I came back to this because I heard the big news about the N64 core and that he was using the DDR3. Apparently the DDR3 has plenty of bandwidth for the N64 core, but latency might be an issue, especially given the shared nature of the memory...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Well that didn't take long. Here are the commands to overclock DDR3. Try at your own risk. These commands must be run sequentially - that is, you must overclock to 900 MHz before setting 950 MHz, as large jumps will cause the system to crash. I could make clock transitions smooth with a kernel driver like I did with the CPUfreq one. The SDRAM part ...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
So if I put the modded kernel in now, will update_all override it even if there hasn't been a main kernel update yet? Getting impatient for it to come down officially... update_all will not override your custom kernel until an official Linux update comes I believe. And when the official Linux update comes, it'll include these changes, so I think y...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Currently it gets unstable before it gets hot. So if you push to 1.4ghz you just get instability, but not in a way where you would TJ max the chip or burn it. This will not happen in a official kernel anyway. Maybe someone will do what Coolbho3k while pushing voltage up and clocking it at 1.6 or even 2 ghz but this will never end up into main sinc...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Not to go off topic, but if it's just close enough at 1.2 GHz, has anyone tried just running `renice` on the munt process to make it a higher priority when running it on-board? After the overclock the process priority might just make a difference. I haven't tried no, how would that work? Is the Kernel in main already updated btw? Not yet, the kern...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Its still unproven. The arm cores have no thermal throttle. Its a very dangerous thing to put into main and should be left as a user replace option. The de10 nano uses a particularly heat-tolerant SoC, specced to run safely at up to 125 degrees C, so any conceivable temperature increase is harmless to the hardware - the worst thing that could happ...

Re: Release DE10 Nano Overclock Kernel BETA
Sorry guys, been neglecting my duty here. My branch is also updated with these changes so folks can of course continue to build against it. I ...
