Re: How do you re-create a video console?

Just as easy to take the verilog code and just connect it up like that. Not visual, but practically the same. I was just trying to imagine a sort of interim step in learning going on what you said about breadboarding :-) this was me trying to be helpful, in my own way, knowing I know nothing... Those discreet component CPUs linked to on the page d...

I bet someone could modify IceStudio to work with the Quartus command-line, and add in the De-10 as a target option. Am only spit balling... But if it meant that people could easily get "virtual hands on" experience of 74series logic, maybe it would be a good educational tool?

Re: How do you re-create a video console?

One thing I would say, my problem was, looking a bit and then trying to look at something else, or thinking some different hardware would allow me to 'get it'. In the end the only thing that let me get it was building it on a breadboard first and then doing it in Verilog. That's why I'm trying to shorten that learning curve in my videos. I think y...

Re: How do you re-create a video console?

So I have my 8bitworkshop book, nico's videos, and nandland. I am sure this will keep me busy. I suffer from the affliction of wanting to do interesting things that are well outside of my capabilities but also being very easily distracted, it is a bit of a failing let me tell you! Aside from being able to do some basic "bronze age" type g...

Re: How do you re-create a video console?

One point with the book cited is that, as you mentioned, it is designed to be used with the online IDE. It's a bit quirky compared to writing for an actual FPGA. Still very useful though. He makes some leaps that I personally found a little difficult to understand. Of course, I would shamelessly plug the MiSTer Retro Wolf channel on Youtube, since...

Re: Hang on grey screen?

if you have python 3 on your computer you can try to use this tool to convert your roms to nes 2.0 header. script requires New Rising Sun's NES header database for the link on the page. https://github.com/Kitrinx/NES_Header_Repair Ring King not working (ROM or mapper issue?) https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=2198 This worked a treat, and save...

Thank you @MiSTerFPGA_UK SDRAM

On my third attempt to get working SDRAM it finally happened - was ripped off first on amazon (a full refund and a sorry gift card), then sent faulty goods (returned), before finding @MiSTerFPGA_UK. 32MB is solid at 160Mhz so far, and they very kindly sent me a free heatsink and USB Wi-Fi dongle (which I needed), all for 20 quid, with tracked posta...

Thanks. Just so I am clear, it's a case of downloading a different archive, rather than using a program convert the ROMs?

Hang on grey screen?

So I now how my new SDRAM card, and it seems to work - no errors to speak of on mem test after 5 mins... However, I am still getting just a plain grey screen whenever I try to run a NES ROM (from archive.org, nointo, full set); can anyone suggest a way forward please?

GBA game worked, for test purposes

Thank you :-)

Re: USB Keyboard Not Recognised

Fwiw, I used this to do my setup

https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/mr-fusion

As you say, it works with one sdcard, so that suggests it is not power, and you have ruled out the switches.

I know no more that you, probably less, but thought I would mention it.

As I was recently told, try the GBA games, they don't need the SDRAM, 486 stuff works too.

Is there a particular specialist site, or is it a case of just trying the usual suspects for such things? Thanks!

Re: Using alternative SDRAM board, please advise

Try just downloading a smaller number of games (the top 25-50?) and see if they work. If you are on a poor internet connection and are downloading a 12GB file, there is a chance an error can occur which ruins the whole download. The no-intro romset is arguably the best, so any problems with downloading aren't due to it. I can believe it, I suspect...

Re: Using alternative SDRAM board, please advise

:-) it was the 12GB nointro GBA file on archive.org, took /many/ hours to download then was corrupt. Will have another look, but was hoping for a recommendation of an alternative source. Thanks for taking the time to respond though.

Erm. Is an archive. Org of GBA roms. I do appreciate your point, not sure of forum etiquette here though.

And after nearly a day of downloading an archive, org gave me a corrupt file:-( would just love it if anyone knows of an alternative comprehensive source. Pm would be cool. If not, that's understandable.

Mine didn't work with mister either (otg, or via a powered hub) , but then I read one needs to check the dip switches. I am a new user, and it was the first problem I had.

Re: How do you re-create a video console?

If you're just starting out, Designing Video Game Hardware in Verilog is not a bad place to start. It will still be a bit of a way from there to developing a recreation of an existing system but you're going to need to at least know most of the concepts in there before you can really make much progress. I have this book, although I have yet to wor...

Re: Using alternative SDRAM board, please advise

The SDRAM test dropped to 70, then displayed 0001 0000 in yellow, while the red counter just kept going up. I understand that to be a complete fail, but am happy to be corrected.

In the mean time, I am stuck in the house over the bank holiday with a partner who came down with C19 this morning, so could so with something to occupy myself. The ask: I h...
