Re: Converting a Core into Real Hardware

Here's a recent chat with Jeri Ellsworth where she gives quite a bit of detail about converting an FPGA design for the C64 DTV into an ASIC, and some other fun behind-the-scenes anecdotes of the DTV project: https://youtu.be/C2hLIiogQrY?t=272 tl;dw takeaways relevant for this thread: It costs millio...

Re: A real PC XT Core perhaps ?

Not sure if you have the LEs on the FPGA for it, but perhaps you could add GameBlaster (C/MS) support using Sorgelig's implementation of the SA1099 soundchip: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ao486_MiSTer/blob/master/rtl/soc/sound/saa1099.sv It was a niche card but it would fit well with the speciali...

[*] The output change from monochrome to color is now done with CTRL + ALT + Bloq Despl , instead of just Bloq Despl By the way, Bloq Despl is Scroll Lock in Engligh keyboards :) Amazing progress on the core! I hope to see it on MiSTer at some point... I do have a ZXUno but I haven't used it in a w...

Re: Converting a Core into Real Hardware

I think one has little to do with the other. Seems like this guy Darren is the common link. He was working at IronStone Partners which got the C64 rights and licenses from Tulip to develop the DTV. Perhaps he was the marketer / "idea person" behind the DTV, whereas Jeri Ellsworth was part of the ha...

Re: Converting a Core into Real Hardware

The C64 DTV was a good example of the pitfalls of trying to make an ASIC clone ( https://www.c64-wiki.com/wiki/C64DTV ). When it came out, I figured it would be reused widely, like the NES SoC that powers so many cheap retro game products. It has sold well (600K+ units according to the above) yet th...

Re: A real PC XT Core perhaps ?

This core would be a must in Mister, as a preservation project! I vote for porting it. Definitely has a niche for early games that run on composite colors, if it could simulate the artifacting as is done with the Apple II core. This page lists 57 games that support that mode: https://www.mobygames....

Re: Why is the default layout flipped from the Neo Geo CD Pad?

I think it's fine if the MiSTer core is doing what makes sense for its platform. Positional mapping is a feature of the platform, currently not used in the core. It is relative to a SNES gamepad so mapping to a Neogeo CD controller is the most natural Has anybody tried my build with gamepad_default...

I just checked, and positional mapping is not implemented for the Neogeo core.

Basically this part of the core config string:

Code: Select all

J1,A,B,C,D,Start,Select,Coin,ABC
should have two versions (jn and jp).

Re: High-school class based in MiSTer

This seems practical to me. Maintaining a fleet of MiSTer is easier than a bunch of RPis, and the kids can't browse the net and get distracted with Youtube.

The DE-10 has an educational discount, and they may have gotten a 32MB SDRAM expansions which is fairly cheap.

I use a 12V -> 5V buck converter and cable splitter for my arcade1up mods. 12V goes to the screen and marquee, and 5V powers the ...

Besides that aspect, im referring to the coding side of it.. I've found Flash to be pretty similar, and ported some of my Hypercard games to it. This may be something the amiga die-hards may want to consider adding to AmiBerry or other Pi hosted Amiga emulators with a view to getting a new hardware platform for the amiga. Re: NEC PC-FX

I'm sure a core is doable but the PC-FX is like the CD-i and 3DO... consoles that bet heavily on FMV and didn't really do that well compared to the competition. So it's a lot of work for cores that may not be used that much. I'll gladly explore the whole library for it if a core is ever made, though.

I should add that the logic for generating colors in the code is documented here: http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~sedwards/papers/edwards2009retrocomputing.pdf Interpreting colors is the bigger challenge in converting the Apple II+ output to color VGA signals. Unlike VGA, which conveys separate red, gre...
