Re: ADC and TZXduino

In your schematic, C6 isolates the DC drive and the next few steps of the circuit then proceed to apply a DC bias and send it into a comparator (or possibly op-amp). As the comparator has a 5V supply, a 5V input is not expected to damage the device, though a supply greater than 5V might. This looks to be a type of “zero-crossing” detection circuit ...

Re: ADC and TZXduino

You just have to play with the volume of the device until you find that sweet spot. ...Which is actually one of the reasons I wrote the ADCTest core... so that one has visibility to the level. I recall from the old days that volume levels were always an issue, and being blind to them made tape use painful, even when the real computer and the real ...

Re: ADC and TZXduino

The 16/64 numbers almost certainly mean something compketely different than what you think. Without looking at the code, I would assume that they are related to reduction of spurious change, and so are measutres of delta change in signal (probably a minimum change required to be accepted as good data). I believe that there is no bug; just a misunde...

Re: ADC and TZXduino

Is that the ADCTest core ? If so, that volume level is way too loud - the yellow lines are the limits of the analog-to-digital converter, about 3.3V... The level which should be played would be "line level" which is closer to 0.8V peak-to-peak. At the lower level, the system has a chance to modelling the waveform properly. Note that ADC's...

Re: Donkey Kong: Walking Sound Hack?

My issue with "trusting" MAME sounds (or anything) is that each board/system/module is built to a different standard, and there really doesn't seem to be a "known issues/limitations" list anywhere. Trusting MAME has gotten many an emulator/core author in trouble in the past because of bad axiomatic thinking. Perhaps Donkey Kong ...

Re: Terasic DE10 Nano Price Increase

Based on the pricing of other FPGA boards, this will eventually happen.
Prices of older boards tend to drift upward as they are de-emphasized.
Even at current prices, the DE10-Nano is an excellent price for such a board.

Re: New MT32-pi-lite official board - could this board do arcade analog audio?

Indeed. Currently, some such sounds play back digital samples, and some are not accurate (but others are accurate). MAME is in the same state. It is important to ensure that when these are found to be incorrectly generated, an authoritative source for the sound needs to be identified. I have seen reports (for different types of ‘issues’) which cite...

Re: Converting a Core into Real Hardware

Quite a few of the cores have the key chips broken down that way, and work hard to have the same signals, timing, and transitions. (Though not all do this.) These days, the real problem would be the required level-shift for any system which runs as 5V logic, or buffering required for CMOS-to-bipolar transition. (FPGAs are low-power CMOS which basic...

Re: Converting a Core into Real Hardware

Yeah, so… this is just pulling apart words and ascribing pedantic meanings to them… in that sense, they are all “emulators” and all “real hardware”. Which is fine, and literally true. But in effect you are asking for an all-new lexicon to be created to describe any gaps/differences, which I am not against, but also not going to propose, as most peo...

Re: Converting a Core into Real Hardware

This is an odd question, because it already is real hardware when running on the MiSTer. by this logic emulation is running on "real hardware" which for the purposes of using the term emulation makes the statement very misleading Well, yes and no… because a computer is not a console, and there are a huge number of abstraction-level varia...

Re: CRT vs. LCD "Disadvantage of CRT with Cores"

Everything will run on HDMI (i.e. LCD or OLED); the VGA output is output *AS GENERATED BY THE ORIGINAL CIRCUITRY*, meaning that: (1) If your specific CRT doesn't support that output, you should not expect to see anything... and nobody can guarantee that the signal will not cause harm to the monitor, especially in the case of unsupported frequencies...

Re: Direct Video -> I/O Digital Edition v1.2

Should be better - there are only enough GPIO pins to produce 6 bits of colour for each of R, G, and B on the analogue board; there are 8 bits used internally and in the HDMI output. But In this case, you need to use the HDMI direct output, which is at the original resolution (usually 240p) which is not always handled by HDMI monitors, so initial s...

I notice that you are quoting me from 15 months ago. Somewhere in the past 15 months, I found a post somewhere from the author of the Real Coco core which states the same thing. I’ll take his (and your) word for it, as I really can’t verify with no source available. But until I saw that declaration, there was no way of knowing as CoCo3FPGA had been...

I also heard from another user that they received theirs 9 days after initial order from an "out of stock" status at Terasic. I'm not sure what shipping options are available, but obviously that package would have been shipped via courier (probably Fedex).

Re: What componensts do I need for full MiSTer setup?

Although some people swear by Blisster, I would recommend against it, as it is not supported by all cores, and it is not official. Since USB went to 1 millisecond polling over a year ago, its use case is significantly also diminished. SNAC is completely separate from USB and if you plug one into the other, you will probably ruin one of them. They u...

Re: What componensts do I need for full MiSTer setup?

A ‘full’ setup is definitely more than most people would want or have.. full would also include MT32-PI, realtime clock, all the SNAC gear, a CRT… Pretty sure the intention was ‘standard’ setup. Which as stated above varies by vendor, but in general covers: DE10-Nano & power supply 128MB SDRAM I/O board (analog or digital) USB hub Case USB cont...

One might as well say something like "There's no difference between a Toyota and a Lexus".
In fact there is, but for many people the differences aren't worth the money.
And in some cases, might not even be noticed.

Whatever makes you happy, please pursue it.
For me, I will pursue both FPGAs and software emulation, in different use cases.

Oh, I think I had misread the thread previously... the spinner I have is the one I believe that Sorg had already. I don't know anything about the Ultimarc spinner or the other one. Still, the 'lsusb' command description is what should work. But if Ultimarc works on various cores but not that specific one, it would seem to be related to how events a...

Re: Does the GRS spinner work with Tron

So probably the best way would be to: 1) Log in as root, either via the USB serial port on the side of the device (TTY console) or via network. It's been a long time since I logged in by network, I don't remember if telnet works directly or whether it needs to be a secure transport. 2) before plugging in the spinner, run 'lsusb' (without the quotes...

Re: Renesas plans to ship small real low cost FPGA

The product line is planned up to 5000 gates, but they haven’t announced all of the devices yet. To me, there are two key takeaways: 1) These will be great for discrete logic consolidation, simple state machines, and overall cost-down on electronics which are not so complex (but still a 1980’s ASIC complexity) 2) General trend toward lower cost dev...

Re: Does the GRS spinner work with Tron

Hmmm… I think Sorg may already specifically have one of these, so I believe the framework should support it just fine. That specific core, on the other hand, may be a separate issue… do I understand correctly that other cores work fine ?

If so, I’d log a GitHub issue specifically against that core with all these details.

If you are looking for "available on hand" stock at Mouser or Digi-Key, don't expect to see them for months. If you pre-order from Mouser, you will see that the future availability at the time of the next shipment drops. In other words, they are pre-selling the next shipment. As sales will continue to be equal to or greater than supply, y...

No, the retail price is rising. It hasn't hit all retail venues yet though. The Terasic site is just an early warning indicator. The description of why this board is so much less expensive than other FGPA boards (generally over $500) has historically been because the manufacturers of the chips are all subsidizing by offering substantial discounts o...
