Re: Scart vs VGA

I don't think you'll find many, if any, VGA monitors that could do 15hz, or even 31hz. Most are probably 50hz minimum. There are some old VGA LCD monitors that were able to do 15hz at their lowest resolution, but they often look terrible compared to a CRT. I think that maybe you are mistaking vertical refresh rate (50Hz in PAL, 60Hz in NYSC, 120Hz...

This works on my Sony CRT

[ao486]
vga_scaler=0
video_mode=640,6,56,66,224,14,8,18,12000

224 vertical res is a bit low, and causes some text in games a little hard to read. But it does work for me.

Re: What Do You Think Will Happen Once MiSTer Reaches It's Limits?

Taking a 240p image and scaling it to 4k is not a hack. Changing how the graphics chip is emulated internally, so that this upscaling doesn't even need to happen, is a hack. Doesn't matter if it's FPGA or software emulation. Original hardware don't have 4k scalers, if you connect original hardware to a fancy 4k OLED TV then the resolution will be ...

Re: What Do You Think Will Happen Once MiSTer Reaches It's Limits?

I don't see any "FPGA snobbery" in this thread or forum. I for one use software emulators pretty frequently, even inaccurate ones. Inaccurate emulation is better than none at all, and just about every emulator or FPGA core author has learned from other projects that already existed. It's just that when given a choice, some of us prefer t...

Re: What Do You Think Will Happen Once MiSTer Reaches It's Limits?

It's weird for them to call it a hack, but I think I know what they mean. Hardware renderers, as far as I know having kept up with this for awhile, can't really be cycle accurately (or at least aren't currently) used for ps2 emulation. In terms of the PS1 emulation at least, the hardware renderer in mednafen is a mess. Look at the water in the ope...

Re: What Do You Think Will Happen Once MiSTer Reaches It's Limits?

Artificially increasing the rendering resolution is a hack. Hardware renderers are a hack. Changing how the system is emulated on a per-game basis, to get around problems like how the PS2 has a different floating point format, compared to x86 PCs, is a hack. Being able to play the most popular games is not a good measure of accuracy either. I don'...

Re: What Do You Think Will Happen Once MiSTer Reaches It's Limits?

I would hardly call PCSX2 hacky and glitchy. Ok, some games have been problematic - I remember how long the Jak series had rendering problems when using a hardware renderer, such as Jak's eyes. But the PS2 did things that just wasn't/isn't possible with PC hardware, so some sort of middle-ground had to be made by the devs. I mean, I can fire-up mos...

Re: Is MiSTer FPGA Overkill For My Needs?

To be completely honest, I have a Pi 3b+ with a Pi2Scart hat, a full Mister set, both hooked up to the same CRT, and for some systems you wouldn't notice a difference. If anything, the Mister has the edge for a crisper display (VGA to Scart), whereas the Pi I have to use specific scripts and video-modes to get the best from it. For example, on the ...

Re: What Do You Think Will Happen Once MiSTer Reaches It's Limits?

I wonder why people keep saying that consoles beyond the PS1 are easy to emulate in software, and that FPGAs aren't necessary for this task? PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube and Wii are all emulated pretty poorly today, with lots of glitches, performance all over the place, game-specific hacks, dynamic recompilers, shader caches, and so on. If anything, t...

I'm more interested in cores for hardware that is unobtainable, or stupidly rare and expensive, rather than easily obtainable hardware (Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube). That looks a cool little thing. Can you animate the images ? Was thinking something like an animated 1541 drive would be superb, or for Atari - the 1050, or even a 1010 cassette drive. Blimey!! Didn't see this. A Spectravideo SV-328 core.
Always wanted one of these, but they go for silly money on ebay. And now we have it on Mister, even better.
Tried Hero, International Karate, and the Hyper Sports games, didn't realise if the core had locked or not - it was the slow tape loading taking much longer than expected to load.

For Pi VGA there is this https://pinout.xyz/pinout/gertvga_666 And input lag, with Pi2Scart, is very close to the real thing - the Pi runs the emulators with their original 15KHz resolutions. http://pi2jamma.info/pi2scart Lag would more likely come from whatever USB controller used, such as USB arcade sticks - I believe there is a lag chart for USB...

Modern emulation has it's place. For example, RPCS3 makes me want to box up my PS3 and just use RPCS3. The higher resolutions, patches to take a 30fps game to a 60fps game - and this transforms games. Games like the Motorstorm games have a new lease of life at 4k, 60fps, rather than 720p 30fps. We also have Xenia, a Xbox 360 emulator - not as advan...

On my real BBC Master, when I used a MMC in the past, I found it very picky with writing. There were two MMC builds you could do, Turbo MMC, and Super MMC - I am not sure what Mister core supports. What it needs is proper ADFS disk support, then we can use actual .ssd images.
