Re: 68020 AGA core - 2 game issues

I just played both those two games on real Amiga system, but instead of cycle exact 680EC020 A1200, I used one 060 A1200 and one 060 A4000. So again, the problem with these games is NOT that there isn't a cycle exact 68ec020, but simply limitations and bugs with the current TG68 in 020 mode - as usual.

Re: Sponsoring RTG support

Right. DeluxePaint is one of those programs that rely heavily on the chipset. One of the features of DPaint V was RTG support, but mind you - this was 1995, RTG as we know it today was at its infancy, CyberGraphX had just been introduced, P96 still didn't exist, people with graphics cards were more likely to be using "old" RTGs like EGS, ...

What programs? Of course a lot of classic software was written for native chipset and will never work well with RTG.

Re: 68020 AGA core - 2 game issues

Well, I'm afraid you will never see cycle exact 68EC020 unless you do it yourself.

Do you think those AGA titles above that struggle on tg68 work well on real A4000 with 030 or 040?
That should tell you what you need to know regarding the need for cycle exact 68EC020.

rhester72 wrote: Sat Sep 12, 2020 11:48 pm Of course 68000 and AGA could have coexisted - why not?
Because 32bit databus essentially - real AGA uses 32bit transfers for bitplanes etc, while 68000 (and ECS) only does 16bit. That’s why I doubt you can just connect real AGA chipset to a real 68000. IIRC, the Minimig AGA simulates 32bit transfers by doing two 16bit transfers.

Re: 68020 AGA core - 2 game issues

When 68000 is selected as CPU, the MiSTer will use the cycle exact Fx68k core from ljor, while if you select 68020, it will use the tg68.C core by tobiflex. So two different CPU cores. TG68 started out as a 68000 core, and 020 functionality was only added years later. It works amazingly well, but isn’t “perfect”. Tobiflex has mentioned that he has ...

But a more normal location would be C: along with a line in S:User-Startup, or make an icon for it, type “tool”, with CLI and DONOTWAIT as tooltypes, and put it in SYS:WBStartup.

Those really look like roms from AmigaForever, just from the naming and what you have available there, heck... some of them are OS 3.X kickstarts.

Easy test, how large are they?

524288 bytes - original kickstart
524299 bytes - AmigaForever

Re: Performance vs real A1200 + 030

This can only be the effect of the CPU slowness / latency, as the chipset, both OCS/ECS and AGA, is hard real-time - that is, there is no backpressure control, so either it works as fast as it should (and as it does in real Amigas), or there would be visible glitches in the display. I see, and yes that does make sense, all my AGA systems have fast...

Re: Performance vs real A1200 + 030

Well, what is really the big difference between a 68020 and a 68EC030 soldered on the motherboard of the A4000D/CR in terms of speed and software compatibility, and how does the TG68 in the MiSTer compare? My guess is that the TG68 in the MiSTer easily outperforms the 25MHz EC030 on the A4000D/CR motherboard.

That's not something to just "enable", that requires total rewrites of both the chipset and the CPU cores.

I could be wrong, but where I notice most of the "sluggishness" on both MiST and MiSTer, compared to "real" A1200/030 systems, is in the "graphics", that is, in the AGA-chipset, and not so much in the CPU.

Why not go the way of uaehf.device and not use emulated gayle at all?

Or for that matter, now that the "MiSTerFilesystem" exists - make sure it works really well and just use directories on the "Linux side" as partitions on the Amiga side. (This is preferred way with FS-UAE, it keeps all amiga filsystem metadata in .uaem files.)

Re: Sponsoring RTG support

CPU on the ARM with custom chips and RTG on the FPGA seems RTG is not something that is "on the FPGA" - RTG is SOFTWARE (like P96 and CyberGraphX, with their drivers) and as such runs on the CPU (wherever it is) - that is the entire point of RTG. The question is whether RTG driver should use FPGA to render the display or if it should jus...

Re: Silly question: Change CPU speed?

Keep in mind that “the 68020” isn’t really a 68020 at all, it can be faster on some things and slower on other, compared to real 68020. Tobiflex wrote some time ago that he intends to make a new 68k core, one that is 32bit from the start, and not “mostly 16bit” like tg68 is.

Re: Sponsoring RTG support

Strictly speaking, Minimig is the chipset and the CPU cores are Fx68k for 68000 and TG68 for 020. For discussions regarding the CPU cores, there are threads over at atari-forum.com :)

What has been discussed here is so called “hybrid emulation”, using software CPU, emulated 68k on the ARM CPU, along with chipset on FPGA.

Sheesh, and all I do is record samples with my phone, save them to my cloud store, from where the MiSTer Linux side picks them up and converts them to various usable formats such as iff/8svx using sox, saving them back to the storage that is shared with the Minimig core :)

“Typically” on real Amiga, yes, but this is MiSTer, it already displays native modes on HDMI, and the analogue port seems to mirror what’s on the HDMI, so I suspect it’s not possible to seperate them.
