I'll be happy to release my little pack when I recover the files, but that's the extent of my ambitions there. ;)

Re: MiSTer Wallpapers

Wallpaper's really taste-dependent, everyone's varies. Wallpaper suitability also varies by the resolution a person runs their MiSTer at, and can take significant storage space if nice clean PNGs are used. That said, the MiSTer's built-in wallpaper choices are spartan to the extreme. Maybe a small (relatively neutral in content?) wallpaper starter ...

Re: Sega Saturn core work with the BlisSTer?

The low latency USB mode, however, should work. You can tell what mode you're in by the light color by the port. Red is for LLAPI and green is for USB mode. Just a point of clarification I want to understand, I have assumed the BlisSTer's two HDMI-style ports run at the same USB polling rate as any MiSTer USB port, is that right? If so, then they ...

When does the Metroid title screen sync loss occur? Is it when the particle things fly in from the corners to the center and the screen flashes white for a second?

Re: Humming sound, speakers

I will say that if it's a constant humming, that does sound more like a ground loop, like AngelicLiver suggested.

If the sound is more reactive to things like how bright the screen is and disk access, that's the noisy analog jack output I am talking about.

Re: Humming sound, speakers

The 3.5mm audio jack on the analog i/o board is noisy as hell, unfortunately. The workaround is to use digital output. Luckily the same jack also supports optical out, which is way cleaner.

I got tired of shoddy analog -> optical converters so I ended up just picking a set of bookshelf speakers that has native optical input.

Great!

If anyone also wants to test the resistor mod with RGB input, it'd be great to hear if you can reproduce the original Reddit user's "slightly blue" result.

Re: Information Overload

That is a good point by daveo. I'm quite happy with my analog i/o board for my use cases and have had no need for the digital one so far. Its greater simplicity + capabilities re: analog video output make it a better choice for my needs. One potentially very cool advantage of the analog i/o board is it can output both HDMI and analog video simultan...

Re: Information Overload

Two very common choices are a consumer CRT TV with "component" input or a CRT PC monitor with VGA input.

Here is a thread about using an adapter to convert your digital i/o board output to component. I assume you can do something similar to get VGA out of it but am not a digital i/o board user so dunno specifics.

Ah, glad you got a playable for now at least! By cue errors, I just meant that sometimes the .bin filename listed in the .cue file would not match the actual .bin filename, resulting in an error. Easy to fix of course. I appreciate you wanting to troubleshoot. Personally, I have found optical disc images so fiddly over the years that I am just thri...

If you have access to an RGB display, you could also check if you get the Reddit person's "slightly too blue" look in RGB output.

Re: Can’t Load Old Saves After Fresh Installation [Solved]

Ah, okay. Well each .sav is a separate memory card. Think of it this way: one file = one memory card. So if you rename Alundra's .sav to .mcr, open it in MemcardRex, and only see Alundra icons, then yeah, it is on its own memory card. Which is the best way to go with the current PSX core imo; keeps things simple. To "export" it again just...

Re: Can’t Load Old Saves After Fresh Installation [Solved]

Vexing. See if the excellent Windows app MemcardRex can read your .sav. (You can either disable file type filtering in MemcardRex's "Open" UI or rename your .sav file with a standard extension like .mcr.) If it opens successfully and looks normal maybe you can try re-exporting it or something. Your problem sounds odd though, not sure I'm ...

Re: Core hangs after loading CHD image

One easy angle to test is if you can obtain a Ys III CHD from elsewhere, and see if that loads. (In the past I have successfully loaded a Ys III CHD obtained from the internet, seemed to work fine.) Also to note, when I do make my own CHDs from BIN/CUEs, I use the handy "CUE to CHD.bat" batch file CHDman came with. Its contents: for /r %%...

Re: Display Constantly Dropping Component Video Signal

I kind of blame the Mister device here, there's been issues with a number of TVs losing sync over component when hitting very bright or dark screens. Haven't heard of any solutions though and it may well be a hardware issue. This brief lose-sync issue is observable via RGB as well as component, in my experience. A recent discussion on Reddit actua...

The methods I used to back up my vintage PSX/PS2 memory card saves in the past (the former are now happily on my MiSTer): PSX: Dex Drive via Serial to USB adapter controlled by MemcardRex , which is an excellent Windows PSX memcard management software. PS2: Homebrew hacks like FreeMcBoot let you run a file manager like uLaunchElf that can copy your...

Re: Best Version of Original R-Type Playable On MiSTer?

So um, inspired by this thread, I just did an update all and went to test Super R-Type's music on my new speakers and for some reason music playback in that game is fairly screwed. Also make sure 96KHz audio is disabled in the MiSTer INI. That may not work with your receiving device. I thought 96khz only pertained to HDMI audio? Thanks for suggesting. This was in fact the problem when I went to use some new 2.0 speakers via optical tonight. I had to set hdmi_audio_96k=0 to get audio coming out (and indeed, the speakers' docs...

It might be near time for Saturn core to get its own subforum here. :)

Anyone who's tested the beta, could you mention how it handles save files? For example, PSX core creates one save file (virtual memory card) per ROM folder. Wondering if Saturn core is similar or works another way.

Re: Best Version of Original R-Type Playable On MiSTer?

I’m a big fan of the SMS version, developed by Compile. I’m not gonna claim it’s the best version and it isn’t arcade perfect, but it is very good, especially for the hardware. The SMS port is also neat for having an exclusive hidden level! You access it from the ceiling of stage 4. https://youtu.be/QCgkoDXMzEo?t=632 I'm a little concerned that wh...

Re: Best Version of Original R-Type Playable On MiSTer?

R-Types version on PSX is as close to arcade-perfect as the game ever got in the '90s. That's the one I learned to love the game on and I consider it basically the arcade. There may be nuances I'm unaware of. Edit: Btw, if you have a great CRT (or just a digital screen) and peer very closely, you may be able to discern the telltale PSX dithering on...

General advice: In cases like this it can be nice to have SMB (my fave), FTP, etc. set up so, as long as networking is up, you can jump into the MiSTer filesystem to try fixes from your PC.

Great post.

I do recall a brief window, wanna say in early 1997 or so, when I felt N64 stuff like Turok Dinosaur Hunter was still giving PCs a run for their money. Or at least it felt so, in the absence of much 3D accel penetration on PC yet. More specifically, I didn't have it yet (lol).

Apparently they can be pretty convincing, even in packaging. It's easy enough to test on your PC (by trying to fill it to capacity, for ex) if suspected.

Re: PSX Core Official Release

Every game should have its own sub folder containing all its discs, otherwise changing discs will not work correctly and as you noticed, memory cards will be generated incorrectly. If there's only one disc, the game will load by only selecting its folder. you have the solution in your question; you need a folder for each game, multidisc or not. Ah...
