Re: UX for the Poor 8088

I use the simple launcher. Yes you have to select the startup file but the launcher is also very basic so not suited for massive collections. I have maybe 50-60 games on it so it is manageable. What I do is setup the launcher on my PC first, so incremental updates are very quick. If you want to speed it up you can edit the install .bat file to make...

I also noticed that their file size is significantly smaller than the normal ao486 core, so maybe there is something wrong. I would appreciate any suggestions you all have. Thanks!

Make sure to download with "view raw" or you may have downloaded an html file instead (you can open it with a text esitor to check)

Playing them in 2D on a TV is not very fun imo.

There are 3D displays that can take side-by-side video from HDMI. That would work nicely

Around 89-90, I was friend of two brothers across the street, and I'd hang out at their house to play together Lucasart and Sierra adventures on their PC on Hercules (it was probably an AT). Such good times. I wonder if either of them turned out as geeky as I am for older games :D

Re: Approach for quickly changing core settings

You can save INI settings per core, but not "profiles" for one single core.

The only exception is the Amiga core, it has profiles for CPU and memory settings.

That said, you might be able to control a core startup sertings via MGL files:

the issue is the "nix" version of OpenLara uses OpenGL which is emulated slowly. I'm hoping that one day we will have an FPGA versiom of OpenGL. I'm not convinced by the idea, shortcut keys should be very exceptional. F11 for switching from HGC to CGA and vice versa seems useful to me because there may be software that uses both cards simultaneously, and in the absence of two monitors, a quick switch between one and the other is interesting. However, the change to composite video should be...

Re: Ideas for PCAT

Spark2k06 has said very explicitly he doesn't want to touch any of that, so you'd have to find a different designer who was willing to fork the core and take it in a new direction. Yes, I know. It's quite a bit of work to see what is possible, but it can be interesting to try. I'm sure it could compete (or even beat) a fast 286 for older DOS games...

Re: Ideas for PCAT

If not, then the core would spend its life running 16-bit applications as a super-fast 8086 which would be easier to implement by just speeding up the MCL86 using a number of tricks... Indeed, but right now PCXT is using an 8bit bus and the XT chipset.. so maybe first we need a core whith an AT bus implemented, with also the extra interrupts etc. ...

I found some discussion of resolution and frequencies here: https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/mda-hercules-and-other-clones-whats-the-frequency-kenneth.52966/ Couple of things stand out: the clock ought to be 16Mhz (and not 16.25Mhz like some IBM card had), and there are a couple of undocumented graphics modes that not all cards supported: ...

Re: Ideas for PCAT

It would make DOS faster , but not better . I mean, you could do it, but it seems like you're just making a very fast 8086. It might be easier to redesign the existing core to clock faster instead. Not sure that is enough; from benchmarks results it looks like a lower clocked 286 can beat a very fast 8086. I'd suspect it has to do with bigger widt...

Would a 80386 that only operates in real mode be interesting? Implementing protected mode is a heavy lift and DOS doesnt even use it... Speaking of which, was the 386 widely used as an embedded processor? If so, was it used in real mode or was there a need for protected mode in embedded applications? Many later games used DOS extenders that levera...

For the existing cores and software, how easily can you port that to a Xilinx based device? Your best bet is to start with cores already written for Xilinx devices, such as the ZxUno. This page has a list of downloads for it: https://zxuno.speccy.org/descarga_e.shtml (you can also check their forums) Alternatively you can start with MIST cores, wh...

Re: Key Bindings Don’t Save

Maybe check if the config files are read only (they shouldn't, but you never know)

It can also be a bad or corrupted SD card that is not writing properly. You can try doing a CHKDSK, or switch to another SD card to test (even a smaller one would do)

Re: Key Bindings Don’t Save

Which key bindings are we talking about?

There is a mapping which is saved per controller (which can be mapped to keyboard),
but separately there is a button/key remapping function (i.e. use a controller to send a keycode, "joy2key" type of thing)

The latter is never saved, it resets whenever the core is reloaded.

If you are running it from the main SD card, I think that you need to unzip the boot.zip file.

Does it need tk be unzipped if I use a 2nd SD card?

How to setup the ZX Next core?

I keep getting this error when launching the core:

Error opening TBBLUE.FW file

I've tried using the standard boot.zip in /media/games/ZXNext/ both as a zip and extracted to VHD. Neither worked.
I also tried updating TBBLUE.FW to the latest firmware distribution.

Are there more files that have to be copied over to the VHD?
