The ExoDOS comverter was quite useful, but I suppose automating all of it is more work than a fresh install?

Re: Forked cores with 4K horizontal resolution support

Would it be possible to support 3440 x 720 resolutions? What modeline and filter should I use for that? (it would need 2x scanlines) The problem is that increasing the max horizontal resolution from 2048 to 4096 can cause timing issues and compilation failures due to resource limitations. I addressed these issues by removing features, but that woul...

Re: Forked cores with 4K horizontal resolution support

I'd like to do that, but there's a good deal of core-specific logic in main that looks for an exact name match, to the extent that changing the name can completely break the core. For instance, the PSX core can't boot games if it isn't named "PSX". You're absolutely right, I forgot about those! They are needed by most cores with a CD at ...

Re: Forked cores with 4K horizontal resolution support

Interesting. So this allows geting 4K by letting the TV do the vertical scandoubling (technically quadrupling) This should work great for horizontal scrolling games, they often suffer from shimmering if they are not stretched properly. Small suggestion, could you change the name of the core in config string (e.g. NES4k) so that settings can be save...

Re: Taito Egret II Mini Rollerball/Spinner Controller

Can anyone confirm its functionality with mister (or mame). Thanks! Yes it works after a few tweaks. The controller is recognized by default by MiSTer only with the trackball. You will need to change some INI settings to get the spinner to work as well. So far I tried it successfully with: Apple II core (set "Paddle as Analog" to "X...

Re: Electronic Games/Electronic Board Games + MADrigal Simulators

For MADrigal's simulators, best to use a RaspberryPi with RetroPie. The DE-10 Nano is not a good substitute for a recent RPi, and the installation will be streamlined for you. Anything else will require work to port and that same time and effort could be put towards more suitable alternatives such as: Emulate the game with the proper CPU and ROM da...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

There are some cores that overclock (e.g. SNES with SuperFX) or that allow removing some hardware limitations (hardware sprite flickering).
So yes, there are some cases where an FPGA core can enhance the original.

Re: How Difficult Is It to Add Vertical Flip to a Core?

I know a way to use the MiSTer scaler, but it's hacky and I do not recommend it unless it is for a custom builds It introduces a frame of latency as it relies on the MiSTer framebuffer. I don't care if I use it for an Apple II or 2600 cores, but it would be problematic for some other systems. Aspect ratio is also hard to get right. I didn't bother ...

Try remapping the controller again in the startup menu core, then again in the n64 core.

I had the exact same problem with another controller (USB adapter with the original N64 pad). I figure the Y axis got mapped wrong somehow.

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

Even hardware revisions of OG consoles and computers were not cycle or behavior accurate to their predecessors Famous examples are the SiD chip revisions (the original ASIC was never remade exactly), 8088 and x86 clone CPUs, Megadrive/Genesis sound chips, etc. This is why projects like Artemio's MDFourier are important. It's an analysis tool compar...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

Fair enough. I notice the aurhor of MCL86 cleverly mentions the CPU is "cycle accurate but nof cycle exact" But then I wonder how many emulators are cycle exact for the same CPU (if any). The truth often comes in shades of gray though. Would it be fair to say that cycle accuracy is a spectrum? With that metric, are FPGA cores in...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

For most software emulation means running on a general purpose computer system, with hardware shared between processes. The main issue I have with software emulation is commercial devices. Most of them are "good enough" setups, with often bad upscaling and lag, running on cheap phone SoC boards barely suited for the task. So in a commerc...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

What's missing from the "debate" (which is really marketing hype) is to clearly define what is being measured, and what do we mean by "better". FPGAs are much better at having high throughput of signals (data transmission/conversion). That makes it great for replicating low level electronics, interfacing with CRTs, original peri...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

The term is thrown around but doesnt mean that much when talking of an overall system. Maybe the disk drive is not cycle accurate, but the CPU may be. That means some niche uses may not work but all games and demos work perfeclty anyway. To me one thing that that matters is how close we are of accuracy for the power consumed. FPGAs beat hands down ...

This may help: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Gamecontrollerdb_MiSTer There is a central configuration for each VID:PID (which this db helps handle by default) and then an option to map per core. Cores can specify default mappings based on central config. The .map file format is very simple (its just a binary dump), I fo...

If that means direction keys already mapped, then 4 is not ideal but way better than nothing. Just to clarify, this approach does not use the MiSTer feature at all, but instead maps to ...

The C64 (and Mini) / The VIC-20 have functionality to map keys to controller buttons per game. They can only map a preset collection of keys though. It is really handy though and used with a lot of games. That's because they have a fixed list of games with predefined settings. As a comparison, on MiSTer you could use MGL files to boot each core pr...
