Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

DS? He said it wasn't possible before but he is more experienced now and probably has more tricks up his sleeves. Definitely not. This post is from page 2 of this very thread, when DS was discussed as a possibility: https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?p=68792#p68792 Most bets are on the Jag. The other possibilities are NGCD, CD-i, VirtualBoy or a...

Re: So Robert Peip (FPGAzumSpass) Is Working on a New Core...

I doubt it's Saturn, given the current WIP core can already run some games, and because it would be a very ugly thing to do to srg320. As much as I hope it was a 3DO, I don't really think that will be it. NGCD sounds plausible, given the size of the project.

Re: Is it possible to make a MiSTer frontend via a front end core?

Replacing the menu core with a custom version that switches to the Linux screen from the beginning and loads a certain script automatically at start, should be doable. This script can launch the front end. Upon selecting a core, it should be easy to load it via writing a command to /dev/MiSTer_cmd. This can be done in any language, including a shel...

@CartoonDonkey I've only seen that kind of problem when I've tried to install a corrupted RBF. Maybe try re-downloading it again, and making sure it has the right length (3,709,856 bytes).

A lot of classic arcade games have sound issues like Galaxian, Frogger etc... some of them nearly unplayable. I know analog sound is hard/impossible to FPGA, but why not using samples then, like early mame did for many games. It would make them playable.

I did that with Donkey Kong. It wasn't good enough.

Is there any way you could walk me through how you do this? I have my raw save files from uLaunchELF on a USB stick and I have tried converting them to .mcd format with MemcardRex. I boot the corresponding game on MiSTer and mount the .mcd file and when I try to load my save in game it says "memory card not formatted". Am I missing a ste...

Keep in mind that cores are written by many different developers who possibly haven't checked the other developers' cores, so consistency is not something to expect; however, some developers may be happy to hear feedback from users and make the necessary changes to improve consistency.

Yes, like I mentioned earlier, on my IBM-XT PCem it also crashes, but it works on the 486 PCem setup (similar to situation on PCXT and ao486 cores here on MiSTer). Yeah, sorry, I totally forgot. I should have re-read the thread first. What's puzzling is that you get disk errors. Did you manage to get past them? If not, maybe it's a question...

Re: How to Run Problematic Games

OK I've managed to take a look. There's something very wrong with BASICA. I suspect it's related to the version of DOS; the other alternative is a bug in the core. It seems to corrupt the disk buffers or something like that. If e.g. you run BASICA and then type SYSTEM to go back to DOS, the directories are all messed up. What caused the "Direc...

That's my recollection as well, though I don't remember ever using it on an XT.

Re: Wishlist of Cores You Would Like to See in the Future

FPGA is for sub-millisecond devices, not for something hanging off a 31.5KHz serial bus. Technically that's sub-millisecond  MIDI is a 10-bit transmission protocol (8 bit + start + stop, no parity). Each note involves three bytes - event+channel, note, velocity. So, the total time to send a note is 3*10/31250 which is 0.96 ms - very slightly...

Interesting, you might well be onto something here (thought it's well over my head). But the confusing thing is why do these games work in ao486 and 486 PCem? (from the same hdd image).

With BASIC or BASICA? I don't think either of these works on ao486, because they depend on the BASIC ROM, which is only present in older IBM computers.

I also use the button as "start" and it works fine. Make sure to map the buttons both on menu core as well as the psx core. Yes, I did that. In fact, at first I thought that I could get rid of the light gun toggle by going to main and remapping the controller, and that it got broken when I went to the core and remapped it there. PS5 Controller Mute Button - Light Gun Mode?

Re: ZX Spectrum Next: Problem Saving Basic Programs

Someone just made the problem worse by pointing to issue #6 instead of issue #4. https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ZXNext_MISTer/issues/11

Issue #6 is NOT about a problem saving configuration. It's about a problem saving BASIC programs. That mistake will just add to the confusion and reinforce the idea that issue 6 is the same as 4, when it's not.

You can use incompatible software licenses together as long as you have the author's permission. Yes, but all of the authors. In the PDP-11 core case, Rampa only got permission from the PDP module's author, not from the framework's authors.   The issue applying a software license to files that describe hardware is another issue altogether and I do...
