Re: Sufami Turbo Support

Perhaps instead of the FPGA dealing with the bios and two carts, you might be able to assemble an appropriate rom on the linux side. The rom could include the combination of BIOS, BIOS and ROM SLOT 1, BIOS and ROM SLOT 1 and SLOT 2. I believe this is how some flashcarts are used to play these roms, right? You can do that with some, but not all of ...

Re: Composite Blend on Genesis core on all console cores?

My understanding is that the one on MegaSG works pretty poorly most of the time. MiSTer also has an adaptive composite blend feature in the genesis core.

Re: Composite Blend on Genesis core on all console cores?

Well, "better", "improved", "correct" and "incorrect" are all subjective and lie in the eye of the beholder. A sharp, pixel perfect image may be high fidelity to one person, but raw and incorrect to another. Likewise, while I believe that the linked blog posts make some good arguments, with evidence taken fr...

All the composite dithering in backgrounds in Little Samson is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there's probably others though.
I was unable to locate the part you are talking about.

Re: Composite Blend on Genesis core on all console cores?

Can you find me an example on NES where it look notably incorrect without being composite? 2600 and Turbografx also if you have time. SNES is high colors so its not going to be needing this. SMS is RGB, but maybe you can throw that in there if there's a good example. I'm struggling to find any good examples of why adding another step to the video ...

Re: Composite Blend on Genesis core on all console cores?

Any system that used composite or RF for video output will have had games that make heavy use of dithering. That was certainly never a Genesis only thing. Re: Atari 7800 Core

Interesting. Reading about it, the real high score cartridge does indeed save its name separately from the scores and can store results for multiple games. What took me by surprise is that, as far as I understand, this core saves high score data for games individually similar to regular save data in other cores. I guess high score cartridge inform...

Re: Atari 7800 Core

Played some games via USB and found the Summer Games and Winter Games had corrupt graphics. The sound worked. I am not sure if it is just my roms or a real issue. Having lots of fun so far with this core regardless. Thanks! Both of those games work properly, but they do require the header being set correctly. Try googling Trebor's Pro Pack and see...

Just took delivery of my Driving Controller for some Indy 500 action. Looking forward to it! :-) I finally tried this core, and I can't get the buttons to work with SNAC. The joystick directions do work. I tried both a 2600 controller and a 7800 controller, and both an Atari and Sega SNAC adapter. Also, I tried programming the keyboard for button ...

Re: MIDI NES

Midi for any console is not very difficult to do, in terms of implementing a hardware interface. It does, however, require that someone write software for each of them to use them. If you have some kind of rom that's looking for midi input, let me know, and we can add the uart interface.

I haven't tried this core yet, but I am thankful it exists. The 2600 core is not bad, but not perfect. Re: Atari 7800 Core

It says that 2600 is not yet enabled, which hints that it is a planned feature. Considering that there is already a standalone Atari 2600 core, what would be the advantage of enabling the backwards compatibility for the 7800 core? Since a 7800 is basically a 2600 with one extra chip, I would like to add full 2600 support to it as well. While the c...

What a great core. I love the color temperature option, with Hot the picture has the same colours as on my PAL machine on a CRT. Many thanks. I noticed that the Pokey demos from the Trebor Pack don't work. Any chance to get them playing? I actually debugged this for quite a while and discovered the issue is that they don't work on real hardware. S...

Re: 248/256 wide resolutions on SMS

It would be more appropriate to run a wire from the video chip to the top level and use it to select between two correct aspect ratios, as the genesis and most other systems with variable visible pixels do. Showing masked borders creates unsightly extra padding in some 4:3 situations, and also if certain video filters are on.

Re: Your favorite NES palette?

So would you say Unsaturated is the most authentic (OG NES+CRT) palette? I'd like to stress that there is no authentic palette. Devices of the era were extremely subjective in how they decoded composite video and the NES's composite was a bit janky, so even more subject to variations. Two of the same model PVM might display the colors differently....

Re: Your favorite NES palette?

I'm using the Unsatured or the pvm palette at the moment. The Sony CXA is very colorfull, maybe I need to get used to it. Looking at Super Mario, I played this on the NES, but also in de arcades when I was a kid. I don't remember exactly how the colors where for the arcade version. Arcade colors were quite ugly. You can check with the PC10 palette...

I am indeed working on a gameport to USB adapter. I'm currently implementing the Microsoft Sidewinder range. Since you have implemented GrIp support in the core, could you consider implementing the Sidewinder Precision Pro or 3D Pro? They use a similar principle, button1=clock and button2=data. The Sidewinder range need a trigger to send a data pa...

Re: Joystick throttle?

After looking it over, it seems most joysticks do have the timer on board. The lack of an 8th wire though will prevent it from ever being an ideal solution, missing one axis or button. IMHO the best route to an ideal scenario is to get a good gameport to usb converter (I believe McGyver is designing one) and work towards adding a second analog stic...

Re: Joystick throttle?

I am curious if anyone is hooking up game port joysticks to the mister, and how they are doing it (simply game port -> usb adapters?). I wonder if there is any chance of a SNAC or SNAC-like interface for game port devices. You'd need at least 8 wires for it, and we have 7 under the best of circumstances, so at least one button or axis wouldn't mak...

Re: Impossible cores? (for lesser known reasons)

What is and isn't possible generally boils down to a few things. I'm not the most qualified person to answer this, but I'll break it down as I know it: 1) Space. If the design is too big for the fpga, it's dead in the water. After about 75% full, the design becomes difficult or impossible to compile stably. This will include most of the 6th generat...

Re: Joystick throttle?

Standard controllers can have up to 4 axis and 4 buttons. Complex controllers (like gravis pro) attempt to serialize the data of one of the buttons to (very slowly) transmit more buttons and etc. What you describe is a 4 button 4 axis joystick. I would have added this to the 4 button mode, however, MiSTer's framework currently only supports having ...
