Re: Help Understanding MiSTer's Dedicated Buttons/Keys
As long as you have one spare button not being used for game play, you can map that as your MiSTer OSD menu button. From there, the directional pad and the standard layout B and A mappings work for navigation and as back and confirm buttons without any extra mapping (the dedicated back and confirm buttons can be skipped during the mapping process)....

Re: PC 386 and 286 Core Setup Ideas
I'm of two minds about the idea. I think of games like Wing Commander that are pretty particular about what speed the computer is and I like the idea. But I also don't want to see the IBM PC cores get too separated with too many drive images to worry about. Changing up the speed and cache can be a true to life situation if you pick up a machine wit...

Re: Help Getting Onboard with MiSTer
If you're really sensitive to input lag, then that's a pretty good reason to look into FPGA over software emulation. It's not that software emulation can't be tuned pretty well with a capable computer but going with something like MiSTer cuts out a lot of the factors that either contribute to lag or make it more inconsistent. With an FPGA, you're n...

Re: mt32-pi-midi-hat not recognized by MiSTer
Something to keep in mind is that mt32-pi is not specifically a MiSTer add-on even though it's becoming a common use case for it. That's why the custom projects on that page have the MIDI port to use mt32-pi as a substitute for a real MT-32 (or General MIDI synthesizer). None of them were made with MiSTer in mind. As for boards to make a MiSTer com...

Re: Any real difference between VGA and HDMI?
So this is something that is objective but kind of subjective. Is there a difference? Yes. HDMI does introduce a bit of latency just by being HDMI. Is it significant? It depends on your own sensitivity to lag and the displays you're using. In the early days of getting my MiSTer, I did some side by side testing out of my own curiosity. I compared my...

Re: Stacking Official MiSTer v2.1 USB Hubs?
The design of the hub is not made for stacking additional hubs. I believe the micro USB on it is just for compatibility with the older bridge piece (it was micro USB to micro USB) rather than to connect another hub. But even if you could, it wouldn't be a good solution. What you're asking for is to connect a USB hub into a USB hub. It would functio...

Re: SNAC vs BlisSTer vs Deamonbite
Another negative for SNAC, is the fact that none of the adapters come cased, they're all bare metal, and do stick out a bit from the Mister case. I have all 7 adapters, and I have to make sure the main adapter, and the SNAC NES/SNES/MD/ etc... sit on a piece of cardboard and away from anything conductive. MiSTerAddons sells his SNAC adapter in a c...

Re: SNAC vs BlisSTer vs Deamonbite
This is not necessarily an endorsement of the BlisSTer board, but there are some benefits I've enjoyed from it. As an analog IO board user, I appreciate the built in power button. It makes the setup a bit more clean and it's a lot more protected than the usual double DC with the inline switch. I've accidentally hit that when messing around in my ar...

Re: MT32-Pi Why?
Speaking of playing MIDIs on Win95, I'm actually finding that to be the definitive way to play older MIDI files. I dug up an old backup of fan made video game music MIDI files and I found they don't always play properly on modern hardware. Some just play at double speed, for example. SoundFont playback is also unexpectedly unreliable. On my modern ...

Re: Can anyone make The Misadventures of Tron Bonne run on the PSX core?
I totally agree, but I don't understand why data corruption has anything to do with "the downside of FPGA". Data is either correct or it is not, there is no middle ground. If I'm missing something, please elaborate. I'm referencing a difference between real hardware and standard software emulation. Software emulation can often ignore or ...

Re: Can anyone make The Misadventures of Tron Bonne run on the PSX core?
Just as verified ROM dumps are required for the cartridge based consoles, disc rips require the same level of precision and verification. It's the "downside" of FPGA being as close to real hardware as it is. It's not going to ignore slight imperfections the same as software emulation does. When all else fails, compare to a verified copy o...

Re: Sega Saturn core work with the BlisSTer?
I always saw the Bliss-Box ports on the BlisSTer as basically just always connected Gamer-Pro adapters for Bliss-Box with the extra connectivity for LLAPI. I've been running my BlisSTer MiSTer with the USB polling rate at 1000Hz from the script since I got it so I don't have a frame of reference of how or if it affects the Bliss-Box ports. If it wo...

Re: Sega Saturn core work with the BlisSTer?
The BlisSTer board has two modes of operation: LLAPI mode and low latency USB mode. As Captain FPGA mentioned, the LLAPI support has to be added by a third party and is never a default option. Given the current development status of the Saturn core, it's probably not going to even be a consideration until at least after the initial public release. ...

Re: MT32Pi Lite & Thick Cases
If you have the super short USB extension cable that tends to be offered with SNAC adapters, that should work as well for the MT32-pi Lite. I can at least confirm it works from my own testing so it should be the same for everyone else. Anything longer will run into similar connectivity issues that SNAC does with longer extensions. In theory, it cou...

Re: Would a Shockwave/Flash Games Core Be Possible?
I think this would fall outside of the wheelhouse of FPGA. There's not specific hardware per say that needs to be recreated in order to play Shockwave or Flash games since they ran on all kinds of computers. It's more of a software platform. It would be kind of like asking for someone to make a core for Steam (not quite but just to put it into a pe...

Re: MT32-Pi Why?
Even simpler technology (compared to modern devices) can take more space than expected to replicate in FPGA. The Roland MT-32 was basically a professional synthesizer so it was no slouch in technology for its time. It could also be reprogrammed on the fly which is why MT-32 playback on a MIDI can still sound wrong even if you tried to change it for...

Hey all, recently picked up the ProArt and it's great. But it seems to have issues with the PSX core. Do any of you find it losing sync alot? Any suggestions to reduce that? The PSX can change resolutions to suit the needs of the programmer. A popular example is Dino Crisis where it uses a higher resolution for a sharper menu but then drops down t...

Just wanted to add some additional information from my own testing. I picked up the MT32-Pi hat from MiSTerAddOns and used it with a Pi 3 B+ I had around. Works with the MiSTer as expected and with some configuration changes it can be used as a regular MIDI synthesizer. I hooked mine up to a MIDI capable keyboard and I was up and running pretty qui...

Re: An official MT32pi consolidated thread?
I would highly recommend starting with the official GitHub page as there is a lot of information already there on Pis, configuration, etc. https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi But to break it down a bit, there are two main things that determine if a Pi is good enough for MT32-Pi: CPU power and RAM size. CPU power is the most important one. Not enoug...

Re: Can't Load ROMs
MiSTer is as picky with ROMs as original hardware. Software emulators ignore little file issues and continue to play but original hardware doesn't. If it wouldn't work in a flashcart on the real console, there's basically no chance of it working on MiSTer. I'm making an assumption arcade was taken care of by the update_all script which is why those...

Re: MiSTer, Original Hardware, Lag, Some Thoughts!
The thing about bluetooth is not only that it's typically a higher latency connection than 2.4GHz wireless and wired connections but it's also much more inconsistent with the connection. Latency is not just a single number but a range. There's always a minimum and maximum tested latency as well as the average. A bluetooth controller might have a te...

Re: S-Video and Composite Over Component Output! (Custom Cores)
I thought it was for both Composite and S-Video but I can't find the picture of the board design and things are a bit shuffled around as the cores have had a couple relocations. Either way, I'd still recommend trying the "jump start" of turning the S-Video mode off and on. Even using essentially the same fidelity of S-Video through my 170...

Re: Adding Sideart?
It's all about available resources. The computer part of the DE10-Nano is not very powerful or capable by today's standards. To give you some idea, it's using a 800MHz (as in 0.8GHz) dual core ARM processor; a low speed and low power mobile processor. Simply put, its computer part is just enough to run what it already does and doesn't leave room fo...

@Mikes1, thanks for the updates. Are the cores still a WIP or are they reasonably complete? Reason for asking is I still can only get the C64/SMS/Genesis/NES/SNES cores working in PAL with colour, others all remain in monochrome. Just wondered if this is something that we can expect to be fixed eventually or perhaps it is something outside your co...

Re: Vertical cropping displayed for 1200p except C64 core
Cropping is a special circumstances thing for many cores. To get a 5X 1080p crop, you not only need the correct resolution set but also have vscale_mode=0 (fit to screen). Without it, it will be grayed out on the cores that did implement it. The list may be larger now but it had to be manually added to cores so it's not universal across all cores. ...

Did you turn S-video on in the OSD in the core? Is this NTSC or PAL (PAL currently has some issues) Also, this is not a desirable way to convert Y/C to composite. You need a capacitor going across the red and green leads like in this circuit linked below at the very least. https://www.epanorama.net/circuits/svideo2cvideo.html Ideally though you'll...

I didn’t add any type of resistor. Works fine for me. Please see the discussion here as well https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?p=47060#p47060 - it may work fine without, but depending on the model of your monitor/tv you may damage it. I'll freely admit this is outside of my expertise, but isn't the resister discussion firmly around the Direct V...
