Re: Can I Use the FTP Server Without Compromising My Root Password?

You really shouldn't see much, if any difference between a Samba share and an NFS share in terms of performance, at least with SMB3. The kernel speaks it natively, and it should be extremely efficient. On regular PC class hardware, even quite old machines, if you're not getting very close to wire speed with Samba, something is amiss. NFS might be ...

Re: Can I Use the FTP Server Without Compromising My Root Password?

Well I won't argue against your points as I think you're largely correct. My preference is still for NFS to work because I get much better performance out of it since the rest of my network is Linux hosts. I've never had any trouble configuring it, and security concerns are quite low my home network. It's just an option, and options are good. Not e...

Re: InsertCoin Script a Worthwhile Addition?

Personally I would backup all the files in /media/fat/saves, and anything that you may have done a lot of configuration on like your update_all settings. Get them off of the microSD card to be sure.

Otherwise, I think your steps will work.

Re: Grobda - Shield Button not Working?

I updated the SYS files and had a look at this, but there is more happening than just the shield not working. The self test in GROBDA reports 0 0 3 (rather than the expected 0 0 0) so something beyond the control mapping needs sorting out, need to find out what the '3' is indicating. it does look (from Mame driver) as though GROBDA does some bank ...

Re: CGC Game 15: Journey To Silius (NES) [Console]

It's all about memorization. Because if you don't know exactly where some enemies are it's almost impossible to avoid damage. This is especially true when jumping down from platforms. That is just like the Mega Man series. You'll learn, but not before it hurts! I really wish the game would cut me some slack from time to time. Not to make it too ea...

Re: Grobda - Shield Button not Working?

I would say it's very, very challenging without the shields, but not quite unplayable. This game was one of the MiSTer Community Game Club picks here: https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=5149 I didn't get a reply through Github. If I were the author, I think it's likely that I would ignore my bug report as it seems like user error. If you were t...

Re: How to Know if a Device Is Supported?

The Linux kernel read the device info from the device and (I'm not 100% sure) it looks like it's being supported as an Xbox 360 pad (unless you had one of those connected too).

Did you try it?

Re: CGC Game 15: Journey To Silius (NES) [Console]

I played some of this yesterday, and charmless is right that the music is pretty great. The sprites are also nice and detailed (especially for an NES game). In some ways it's a lot like Mega Man. Good graphical design (the backgrounds too). There are some cheap deaths, and you can switch between weapons just like the Blue Bomber switches between ab...

CGC Game 15: Journey To Silius (NES) [Console]

journey-to-silius-nes.gif The player controls Jay McCray, as he goes on a mission to defeat the terrorist group responsible for his father's death. There are five stages, consisting of the ruins of a space colony, an underground concourse, the enemy's hideout, a flying spaceship, and a factory. Re: Samba on Mac OSX

Your router may not have yet cached the network name of the MiSTer the first time if you couldn't contact it by the short name and not the FQDN. If it happens again in the future try adding ".local" to the end of the network name (or just use the IP address). This will happen occasionally on my router running openwrt, but a FQDN will norm...

Re: Can I Use the FTP Server Without Compromising My Root Password?

Malor's suggestion of creating a user with access limited to /media/fat/ (or even just subfolders) is probably the best balance of security and convenience within the existing tools. I wouldn't count on FTPS getting enabled when NFS isn't available either. As I understand it, only a single line is needed to be added to the kernel config to enable i...

Re: Wishlist of Cores You Would Like to See in the Future

I would like to see the Virtual Boy preserved for FPGAs. I have one and most of the NA library that I'd be willing to loan or give to a developer if a sacrificial unit would be needed to make that happen. It's working except it looks like a connection is now bad because the right eyepiece doesn't always work. I saw a YouTube video about reflowing a...

I think it would be cool for DOOM. Re: Can I Use the FTP Server Without Compromising My Root Password?

If your home network is reasonably secure then I don't see why you would worry about compromising your password. /root is the home folder of the root user, so it's natural that you would have write access there if you login as root. (/home/[user] is the home directory of every other user on that system.) SFTP is going to be limited in speed because...

I played some of this game today after getting the core setup (follow the link in my previous post that in turn links you to a YouTube video. Look in the video description text for a download and follow the video's instructions). I like it! It's more "bouncy" than I expected. Re: CGC Game 13: UN Squadron (Capcom Play System) [Arcade]

I've only played the SNES version of this, so it will be good to compare to the Arcade version. One thing I appreciate in an arcade game over a console port is the ability to keep continuing all the way to the end by "adding credits" with the press of a button. Console ports often limit the number of continues. I'm not much better than a...

Re: CGC Round 15 core: Nintendo Entertainment System / Famicom

- Metal Storm, I need an excuse to play more Metal Storm. Metal Storm was #4 on my list of nominations, so I will definitely second that! This was a tough round. Of course my favorite NES games came to mind immediately, but I have already put 12,000,000 hours into them (true story). To get away from those I had to scour some "hidden gems"...

Re: CGC Round 15 core: Nintendo Entertainment System / Famicom

Okay, after much deliberation I nominate: Gargoyle's Quest II - this game is in the Demon's Crest (SNES) line. A late release for the NES, but a solid game nonetheless Fire 'N' Ice - A fun puzzle platformer Journey to Silius - This was intended to be a Terminator game based on the movie, but then the license was pulled. Sunsoft released it anyway w...

I run a ZFS NAS too. Solid stuff. Resilvering is smooth and easy when a disk needs replacement. I'm very satisfied with it. I wasn't clear earlier, and that didn't make a lot of sense. I've re-read my own message several times trying to figure out what I was remembering. You have it correct that a mislabeled region can be a source of trouble, and t...

Re: CGC Round 15 core: Nintendo Entertainment System / Famicom

I nominate Silver Surfer for the NES it has great music varied levels and level select and is difficult yet keeps you wanting to try just one more time. It also isn't the most popular game so many may try this for the first time, it also is a game with simple pickup and play controls so not too difficult to get started. Excellent. That is my kind ...

Re: CGC Game 14: Stunt Car Racer (Atari ST) [Computer]

Games like this definitely show me why some PC gamers would often deride home consoles back then. The ST came out in 1985 while the SNES didn't gain similar 3D capability until 1993's release of the Super FX chip on Star Fox / Star Wing! The NES was just hitting the international markets when the ST was available. Clearly from a computational power...

Re: Cheats May Not Work in Multi-Disk Games?

zakk4223 is correct about the product ID, but I'm pretty sure that if it doesn't find a match there, it will then default to file name. I had to copy the cheats file and rename it for the second disc of Xenogears for it to work (I was also seeking to turn off the random battles. They are IMHO excessive in Xenogears). I should say that this was seve...
