Just looking into it quickly it looks like none of the Verilog or VHDL anyone is using anywhere can be copyrighted in the US if they are considered schematics, they are not copyrightable. So anyone is free to use them (barring patents)? Is that correct?

Possibly.

Re: PDP2011 port to MiSTer FPGA

The GPL applies to software. The actual Verilog and VHDL code that comprises the cores describes hardware and is not covered under it.

Re: Ideas for PCAT

The MIPS cpu in the PSX is a 900k transistor chip for comparison. We can have a much more compatible core than what we currently have with ao486. It will be a LOT of work though for whoever takes on that project.

Re: Ideas for PCAT

The real 80486s had 1.2 to 1.6 million transistors. Directly duplicating that on a Cyclone V's 110,000 LEs probably isn't going to happen. I'm guessing, but I bet the AO486 circuitry has only a small execution core, and then uses microcode to run the more complex ops. I think that's why it has to be clocked so much higher than the real thing, and ...

Maybe a faster performance fork of this core isn't as crazy as it sounds since the ao486 core is slower than the PCXT when all the cache is disabled.

You had to replace the FD controller in an XT if you wanted to use high density drives.

Right, but do they provide their own BIOS update or something? Or was the XT able to handle big floppies natively, given the proper controller?

I think you had to run software to make it work.

Re: Invalid Media Byte on 1.44M floppies

I'm not sure you could retrofit a 1.44MB controller to real XTs, either. I think the original BIOSes in those units simply couldn't cope with that many tracks and sectors on a floppy. But I'm not certain of that, my memories are quite fuzzy. The Monotech NuXT claims high-density floppy support, so it's clearly possible. I went and looked at their ...

Re: Any List of BIOS That Work With MSX1 Core?

So far the one Bios I found that works on it is the Philips BIOS since it's the computer model this core was founded on. Other BIOs I tried just crashes the core. Is there more than one that should work? Probably only the BIOS for the model it's based and also any other models with absolutely identical hardware. FPGA cores are not like emulators a...

Yes, the MSX1 core that was released is based on Philips VG8020 hardware and can load carts and floppies. The other core is a port of the 1chipMSX FPGA system that was originally released in 2006 and is based around MSX-2 hardware.

Sorry, I knew you came along later and fixed it up to work better with the Mister, but I didn't realize you'd invented the thing in the first place! Re: Why Doesn’t the Lion King Run Well on the AO486 Core?

The CPU is really weird in ao486 as some instructions execute way faster than a real 486 (of any type) and others execute significantly slower. On a real i486 I can get Lion King to run perfectly using slowdown programs but I can't get the same results on ao486. I gave up after I spent about 45 minutes with it with no results. That's why we have benchmarks, you can't just go by how it feels. The jump in performance between the XT and AT was as big as the jump between the 286 and 486.

Honestly, none...if they were trivial or low-impact changes maybe it could be added, otherwise it's not worth it. For me, the maximum speed option in this core is a "free" extra, but nothing more. Any great effort required to get something else...due to other limitations, doesn't make much sense. We have to start coming to terms with the...

Now that I know why the CGA is not working well, I have created a 25MHz (cycle accurate disabled) test version. It may not be the true 25 MHz because one additional clock was added during memory readout. However, this is the maximum speed that can be achieved with the current MiSTer_PCXT. https://github.com/kitune-san/PCXT_MiSTer/tree/25mhz-test T...

Re: PCXT Core 10Mhz CPU Speed Possible?

If this core can be overclocked to 286 12MHz or 16 MHz levels of performance, then we can probably skip the 286 generation unless there is 286 specific software that won't run on any other CPU. Of course, we might eventually want a VGA card if there was no 286 core, or an underclocked 386 core might suffice. Then if we can get a cycle perfect 386 ...

Re: PCXT Core 10Mhz CPU Speed Possible?

I'd like to see a list of any games that won't fit either the PCXT or the ao486 cores. It will probably be a very small list and we might find workarounds to make the games work in existing cores. Somebody mentioned The Lion King not working well with ao486, and there was one racing game that seemed to run optimally at 12Mhz (which might work fine...
