Re: MiSTerArch

Interesting. What are the benefits for end-users, or is this mainly for developers? Is this a drop-in replacement for MiSTer's own distro? What are boot times like? Does BTRFS work with all cores out-of-the-box?

Well there's quite a few options and the default options aren't marked as such, but I'll have a look. Thanks!

Re: Where to post bugs and technical issues concerning the PSX core?

I don't think that we are supposed to report bugs yet. The README still says:

"Work in progress, don't report any bugs!"

So let's be patient and wait for an official release.

Re: Nightly Public Builds for the PlayStation Core

I was just wondering if the DBG message at the top-left can be disabled in the nightly builds? Is there a setting that I missed? I feel that the core is good enough that I can use it for my regular PS1 gaming, but this part is a little distracting.

Re: does psx support analog pads?

We would probably need a database of title IDs for games that support analog mode. Then when the user tries to load a game with a matching title ID, analog mode could be turned on automatically. Creating such a database with the PS1's massive library is no small feat however.

Re: Z-Buffer emulation. Is it possible ?

You can add a Z-buffer, but the PS1 library was not programmed with a Z-buffer in mind. Chances are that the Z-buffer either wouldn't do anything at all with the existing game library, or it would create annoying glitches in most games. Some emulators have what they call PGXP which tries to fix the wobbliness, with mixed results. When it works corr...

What is the use-case for not resetting the console when inserting a disc? The only thing I can think of is multi-disc games, which is already covered.

Re: Prevent bios from loading upon starting the core

In most cases, the user is trying to load a new game when selecting a CD. I believe the reset is also skipped if you have a folder with a multi-disc game. To me, this setup makes the most sense and is very convenient. About the BIOS, did you try one of the alternative BIOS'es? There is one on the PSP's PS1 emulator that finishes the animation faste...

Re: Some Scripts Stop Working For No Reason At All From Time To Time

You can just connect your MiSTer's SD card or USB drive to your PC and copy over the cores/filters/shadow masks that you need to update. It really doesn't take that long.

Re: PSX off external hard drive

I've been using my external SSD exclusively for over a year with the MiSTer, and the PSX nightly builds work fine with it as well. Like the other posters, I have the games in the games/PSX directory. Also, would you happen to have game folders on both the SD card and the external drive? Could there be a conflict between the two?

Re: PSX Games that had Enhanced Ports

Final Fantasy I and II have had quite a few ports but the best versions remain on the PS1.

The X68000 Castlevania game also received a PS1 port with some graphical tweaks and some new soundtrack options, including an SC-55 soundtrack (no real SC-55 needed).

Re: CD XA Audio Now Added to the PSX Core

I tried reading about CD-XA and CD-DA and the information I got is that CD-XA is mixed mode (data + audio tracks) but CD-DA is a pure audio CD. But this doesn't make sense if there are PS1 games that are CD-DA (they wouldn't have any data). Does anyone have more information about this?

Re: Question about CD audio

The SPU allows for sequenced (MIDI-like) music with ADPCM/BRR compressed samples. It is kind of a successor to the SPC700 in the SNES (both chips designed by Sony). A lot of games make use of this feature, and then there are also prerecorded compressed music formats like ADX used in some games. As for CD audio, we already have it with PC-Engine CD ...

Re: PlayStation Core SPU audio For Single SDRAM Released

Last night I could not resist and I decided to try a nightly build. The SPU sounds so much better than what I'm used to with software emulators. Graphics are pixel perfect (barring bugs) and have perfect scrolling. The fast CDROM option makes a huge difference for some games like Tomba that have long load times on real hardware. The core is already...

Whatever heat you get is from the ARM part of the chip and it should remain constant regardless of which core you're using.

Re: Autosave

What if the core would place a limit on how many times the SRAM can be flushed to disk per second? So initially, saving would be instantaneous, but if the game is saving at an unreasonable rate, flushing to disk would then be intentionally delayed to something like once every 5 seconds. The game's behavior would be observed in real-time, negating t...

Re: Hybrid AO486 core?

Yeah, and this is a real problem... and also part of why I hope to see this being worked on. Box86 might help I think. Box86 is a wrapper instead of an emulator, or maybe its both. So its a bit like Wine, but instead of making Windows stuff run on Linux, it makes x86 stuff run on ARM. It maps calls directly from x86 to ARM if I understand it corre...

Re: Hybrid AO486 core?

x86 emulation is still quite flaky. PCem will fluctuate between 30% and 100% speed regularly, even when emulating CPUs that are seemingly not so demanding. QEMU will try to emulate the CPU as fast as possible at all times and you can't limit the speed at all, which also isn't great. The emulator that has the most stable performance is probably DOSB...

From the readme at https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer

"Work in progress, don't report any bugs!"

It can't really get any more clear than that. Please give the developer time to make a proper release. Even I am getting annoyed at some users' impatience and I made this account specifically to report issues.

Is the floppy code on the FPGA or ARM side? If it's on the ARM side, perhaps a software developer could take a look. Emulators generally support multiple formats and some of them are open-source.

An N-Gage core would just use the same firmware/OS that a real N-Gage uses. No need to reimplement Symbian.

I was able to transfer files from that SCSI image into an existing SASI image. The short video is in there and it plays fine, but I had to leave out the long video due to running out of space. Unfortunately I was unable to make a clean image due to a parameter error during Human68k's install process. Anyway, here is the SASI image if anyone would l...

I'm going for classic codecs like MPEG-1, Cinepak and WAV, as well as MIDI and a bit of FM music. Video quality will be a bit limited, but it might still be watchable.

Running a desktop Linux distro on the ARM chip is no fun for me. I got desktop PCs for that.

Re: Media players on the MiSTer?

I don't think a special chip or hardware peripheral is necessary for PS1. The console itself already has an MPEG chip, so we just need a video player that can boot from CD-ROM on a PS1. It may not be enough for VCD specifically, but some kind of video playback should be possible. As for ao486, we are all probably familiar with Windows and it is und...
