Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

Fair enough. I notice the aurhor of MCL86 cleverly mentions the CPU is "cycle accurate but nof cycle exact" But then I wonder how many emulators are cycle exact for the same CPU (if any). The truth often comes in shades of gray though. Would it be fair to say that cycle accuracy is a spectrum? With that metric, are FPGA cores in...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

The PCXT core is cycle accurate in its 4.77 MHz, 7.16 MHz, and 9.54 MHz modes, but is no longer cycle accurate at maximum speed (AT like performance).

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

For most software emulation means running on a general purpose computer system, with hardware shared between processes. The main issue I have with software emulation is commercial devices. Most of them are "good enough" setups, with often bad upscaling and lag, running on cheap phone SoC boards barely suited for the task. So in a commerc...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

What's missing from the "debate" (which is really marketing hype) is to clearly define what is being measured, and what do we mean by "better". FPGAs are much better at having high throughput of signals (data transmission/conversion). That makes it great for replicating low level electronics, interfacing with CRTs, original peri...

Re: The “Cycle Accurate” Conundrum and Is There a List of Cores That Are?

The term is thrown around but doesnt mean that much when talking of an overall system. Maybe the disk drive is not cycle accurate, but the CPU may be. That means some niche uses may not work but all games and demos work perfeclty anyway. To me one thing that that matters is how close we are of accuracy for the power consumed. FPGAs beat hands down ...

Re: Edit .map Files?

What are you trying to do? This may help: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Gamecontrollerdb_MiSTer There is a central configuration for each VID:PID (which this db helps handle by default) and then an option to map per core. Cores can specify default mappings based on central config. The .map file format is very simple (its just a binary dump), I fo...

Re: RBF File Structure

What do you want to do exactly? You can use MGL files to customize a core name and change default values without recompiling. For example you can have an "Amiga 500" and "Amiga 1200" MGL files, both uaing rhe same exact RBF for Minimig, but starting with differemt options, and saving settings separately. https://mister-devel.git...

Re: Mapping Keyboard to Gamepad?

If that means direction keys already mapped, then 4 is not ideal but way better than nothing. It could work well for a lot of games, barring some key-heavy ones such as flight sims (even with these it'd shorten the time it takes to remap everything though). Just to clarify, this approach does not use the MiSTer feature at all, but instead maps to ...

10 print pdl(0),pdl(1): goto 10 This will let you see the range of values while the joystick is moved around. If all you see is 255 then that's why your character just moves right. This, exactly. Apple II joysticks have physical knobs to help center them, and the core seems to be sligthtly off center by default. This can cause some controllers tk ...

Re: Mapping Keyboard to Gamepad?

The C64 (and Mini) / The VIC-20 have functionality to map keys to controller buttons per game. They can only map a preset collection of keys though. It is really handy though and used with a lot of games. That's because they have a fixed list of games with predefined settings. As a comparison, on MiSTer you could use MGL files to boot each core pr...

Re: Overriding buttons when pressed simultanously?

Mister on the other hand requires you to release the first "autofire"-button and then press the "charge"-button from the second "alternate" button config. I'm guessing this is the only way the mister can handle this? Or is there a way to do this equivalent to MAME? It all depends how it is wired up. I would expect thi...

2nd. Would saves states be just as hard to add to the Nuked MD core as the current core we use? :) Yes, because Nuked MD isn't build from scratch to support save states either. From what I understand, it requires buulding the system so the whole thing can be frozen by a component (allowing to swap out CPU registries etc). Original hardware does no...

Re: Stumped with what could be wrong?

Try using two separate power supplies to rule out a splitter issue or not having enough power.

Also see if it works disconnecting the USB board to the DE-10. If both power up maybe there is a problem with the bridge.

Also some TVs are picky with the HDMi signal.Make sure you use a default INI with the 720p output and vsync=0 first.

Re: Are You Going to Re-Configure Your MiSTer Setup for Dual RAM?

My primary arcade setup for MiSTer is a modded Arcade1up cab using a fast HDMI screen (measured to be comparable to a CRT). So I have a free slot where I can put an old 32Mb expansion. I probably won't bother to change my travel or primary MiSTers though, as I want the option to dual output video (even if rarely used). Time will tell if some if the...

Re: CYC1000 / Handheld SNES FPGA Device?

The LEs are on par with MiST's Cyclone III. MiST uses an external ARM controller (48MHz ARM based IO controller with 256KBytes flash and 64 kBytes SRAM) and dedicated USB chip for modern controllers. So if this board has enough pins it could theoretically be turned into a portable MiST with a little bit of extra hardware. MiST has a SNES core, but ...

Is there a recommended BIOS set everyone is using, to get this core up and running ?
Never had a PCJr, or Tandy, but have owned DOS PCs in the late 80s, and early 90s.

I use the Tandy BIOS by default on my setup.
You can get it by runnig the .py file provided in he core repository.

I had an external 3.5" drive on my Laser 128EX as a kid and it was awesome! You could hold so many programs on one disk, and they seemed to be less prone to read and write errors.

Right but the core also support hard drives - you can just mount a 32MB hard drive and store whatever you want in it :D

The Z80 card is basically to use the cpm operating system with 80 columns. Widely used at the time. Microsoft sold thousands of cards.

Just remembered that CP/M already runs on the Multicomp core on MiSTer;
