Re: ao486 Config for a Plain Old CRT TV
The EGA version is 320x200 16 colours. They are pixel perfect. 640x480 is not the resolution of these games.
The VGA version is 640x480 256 colours.
Taken from wiki
The VGA version of the game later corrected these issues by implementing 256-color support, which allowed for more advanced background and character art

Re: ao486 Config for a Plain Old CRT TV
@Mister_kirk: I see expletives, Oh please, ONE word was slightly off, don't go into drama queen mode. And this core is called ao486, not ao286. The 486 was a 90s CPU, although first announced in the middle of 1989, it didn't get a proper release until 1990. And this is the period I am talking about, the period where the PC dominated gaming, it pus...

Re: ao486 Config for a Plain Old CRT TV
So? It hasn't been done on HDMI panels either, and yet... Huge chunk of "DOS" gaming also comes from machines where TVs were the main displays (and from the RF/Composite era too), see below. How many graphics cards from the 486 era had composite out ? Not many that I can think of. Connecting a consumer-grade TV to a PC, in the early 90s,...

Re: ao486 Config for a Plain Old CRT TV
The MiSTer itself is a big hack to get a decent image on HDMI displays, in a way. VGA monitors were meant for productivity first and foremost, where you need a very sharp image. Many games (CGA-VGA era at least), on the other hand, will look much better on a TV set, where they benefit from bigger size, vivid colours and inherent anti-aliasing (tha...

Re: ao486 Config for a Plain Old CRT TV
DOS games were not meant for a 15hz TV, they are VGA games for VGA monitors. These resolutions are more hacks to get a decent-ish image on a TV, but don't expect anything as good as a real VGA monitor. Many games are playable, but the overall experience is suboptimal. It seems this core was not meant to be used this way.

If you are in the UK, then this is what I use.

You will need a VGA to VGA cable, and a fully wired RGB Scart to Scart cable.

Re: Load tapes on C64 Core
Make sure you are pressing Shift + ESC first, then load a tap file. The problem this core has is that as soon as you load a tap, it plays straight way. There needs to be a play button, so you can type in the load command, then hit the virtual play button. Also, make sure your tap images are 100% working. Test the offending ones in Vice64 on a PC, a...

Re: MiSTer Core Art (Borders)
That border is done in video editing software, not the Mister.
The Mister is trying to be as close to original hardware as possible, and original hardware didn't use software borders. So, print off a real border, and stick it on your monitor, instant arcade border.

Re: MiSTer FPGA Community Survey Results
Yeah, the arching is just several clicks, then a loss of the picture - literally a split second, and timed with the clicks. It's unnerving, because not only is it random, it is quite sudden and quite loud, certainly loud enough to make you jump. kinda hate myself for saying warmth The warmth might come from the fact that CRTs do get quite toasty, c...

Re: Vectrex Core
Wow, only $300, lol. I'm not in the US, but the UK. But even over here, empty boxes often go for more than the system they're supposed to house. Such as an original Gameboy DMG01 box, those go for silly money, often around £60+ ($80). Not sure if you guys in the US have anyone doing repro boxes, but over here we have an eBayer selling superb repro ...

Re: Vectrex Core
You know...there has to be a way to connect a MiSTer to an old school real actual black/white vector monitor. 1st dude who does it gets bragging rights! Now that, I would love to see. Or even a way to use the Vectrex as a passive vector monitor. you are 100% correct but these days they don't come cheap. I actually paid a lot less than I paid for a...

Re: Vectrex Core
Not trying to stir anything, but forget Mister, or even emulation for Vectrex, and just get a REAL one, you'll not regret it.
Nothing looks like a real Vectrex running, not Mister, not Retroarch, not shaders, nothing. Vectors look the best on a Vector Monitor, not on some modern display.

Re: MiSTer FPGA Community Survey Results
Totally agree. The "alive" description is a great way to describe it. Your VGA CRT arcing is a very bad sign. Mine was doing that for about 2 weeks and then it died completely. Enjoy it in its final days! I suspect it's also the flyback that is it's issue. I don't use it now, those arching sounds are quite unnerving, those clicks, and th...

Re: MiSTer FPGA Community Survey Results
I think if we start to see OLED monitors with extremely fast response times and a future iteration of MiSTer with a larger FPGA or ARM side with a GPU we could make it pretty close to indistinguishable from a CRT using good shaders and fake scan lines. Will never happen. Fake scanlines are utter shite, excuse the language, but I really hate puttin...

Yeah, it's just finished. Just over 4 hours, for 700mb. Oh well, glad it's down. I just worry about, like you said, drop connections and I have to start again. Now for a bit of Mac Plus love, haven't used a real one since the 90s when my print department had one, before moving to a Quadra 630 in 1995.

Do you gain any speed in signing up for archive.org ?
I am trying to download meauxdal's mac file, and it's coming down in kilobytes, 150k to be precise, and it's already taken nearly 2 hours to get half-way, and another 2 hours to finish - that is 4 hours just for 700mb, I can normally download 1Gb in 10 seconds.

Re: MiSTer FPGA Community Survey Results
The day I can play Duck Hunt natively without any tricks on a flat panel along with native resolutions and refresh rates is the day I will consider dumping my CRT's. Until then, long live CRT's! Well said. I would never swap any of my 14 CRTs with any of my LCD/PC Monitors. And, I have yet to see a shader, anywhere on planet earth, that can simula...

This is awesome, yes. It's not public domain, but the fact that he allows this is great. But what isn't awesome is the elitist Vectrex homebrew scene that has an air of Bullington Boys club, about it. Where limited runs of homebrew are sold, then ended, thus creating an artificial scarcity, and rarity, making any homebrew carts suddenly very valuab...

There never was any video standard at 15hz or 31hz, NEVER. I am buffled why anyone should have the need for an experimental CRT capable of those imaginary signals. Those number actually are exactly 1/000 of the horizontal refresh rates for consumer tv and PC monitors (15kHz and 31kHz). These are KILOhertz, and are about horizontal refresh, not ver...
