Some PSX PAL Games Don't Work

Unread post by Azuris »

Good Day together,

so somehow some PAL Games don't work with my Mister, Final Fantasy IX (german Version) being one of them.
Others, as Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider IV, Omega Boost etc. work flawlessly.

The US NTSC Version of Final Fantasy IX does work.

Aside from the Version i dumped myself from the original Disc, some Internet Sites, i also tested the Version from here,
that works flawlessly for others.

viewtopic.php?t=8086

I did test out simple Stuff, as renaming the Files or puting them in other Folders.
I did test out different Bios Files and also one that a nice Users here on the Forum send me.

I tested out a whole different SD Card and did a fresh install of Mister with all its Cores from Mr Fusion.
Both are 128 GB and both from Sandisk.

After testing the Standard Settings, i messed around with different Options, as maybe it had to do with the Resolution of the Output.
So 480i/480p on/off, integer, Fast Boot etc.

The FPS count stays at 00, so it seems as just nothing happens after the PSX Logo.

I have a 1080 Minitor and i am using HDMI.
PSX Core is the newest.

Besides of this, i have no Problems at all with my Mister so far.
Breath of Fire IV is the other Game not working.
Here the same, tested with my own dumped Version and one from online.

Has someone a Suggestions :)?

Edit: I now also tried to run FF IX from USB, the same.

Edit2: On another Thread with a similiar sounding Problem, but for all NTSC Games was the Bios of the PSP suggested, this did not work for me.

As i said in the other thread. The German version of FF IX works fine. Make sure your have copied the correctly named .sbi file (subchannels dump) too. Google for "PSX sbi files". The PAL version is libcrypt protected. If you have for e.g. the Redump version it would look like this for all 4 discs in your game folder:

Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 1).bin
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 1).cue
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 1).sbi
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 2).bin
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 2).cue
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 2).sbi
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 3).bin
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 3).cue
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 3).sbi
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 4).bin
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 4).cue
Final Fantasy IX (Germany) (Disc 4).sbi

Tested "Breath of Fire IV (Europe)" too, the Redump version. Works without any issue here. It doesn't need a .sbi file.

If it still doesnt boot: Make sure you don't have activated some of the PSX core hacks, like CD Speed, Fast Seek, Turbo etc.

Ok, so i had no SBI, to be sure i have searched for it and the Version from there, everything egually in Naming (besides the File Extention),
sadly, doess still not work, also when mixing the SBI with my own Dump (and renaming it to match).

Breath of Fire IV goes sometimes strickt to the PSX Menu, sometimes the System freezes.

As said, other PAL Games, also such that have Libcrypt, as Parasite Eve 2, work.

If all other games are working fine it must be an issue on your side i can't see. Maybe delete the config files for the PSX Core in "media/fat/config/" and try again.

As generell info: Not all librypt protected games refuses to boot when the subchannels are missing. Some of them trigger (developer intended) issues later ingame, like Spyro 3.

You dont need to download any SBI files. Its pulled with the core and so those games "Just Work"

Actually not. You have to provide them manually.

"Some games are secured with Libcrypt and will not work if it's not circumvented.
You can provide a .sbi file to do that. If there is a .sbi file next to a .cue with the same name, it is loaded automatically when mounting the CD image."

Update all pulls a sbi.zip and so it just works

So, update all downloads it and put it automatically in the the correct Game folder? No, it doesn't work that way. Read the quote from the MiSTer Github again. You have to put the .sbi files manually into the correct game folder.

no update all pulls a single sbi.zip file which works withot being unzipped into a games directory. The github is referring to the main distribuition, hence it also mentions getting the bios. Update all can retreive these or it certainly did when configured

I can't see any setting in the update_all.script configs that suggests a sbi.zip is downloaded into the PSX games folder. Which option would that be? For Bios files, yes. I certainly never had the zip in my games folder.

Well it certainly used to be there it downloaded sbi.zip to the root of the PSX games Folder. And from there it works without splitting the zip and adding to individual folders.

It has been many months since I set up the PSX core but I doubt I created a sbi.zip manually

From the script being called

declare -A PSX_BIOS=( \
["boot.rom"]="SCPH7001.BIN" \
["boot1.rom"]="SCPH7000.BIN" \
["boot2.rom"]="SCPH7002.BIN" \
["sbi.zip"]="sbi.zip" \
)

Yeah, so the sbi.zip download only happens if you automatically download the bios files via script. Never used it, put them there manually.

The sbi.zip is useful stops all the messing around copying individual sub channel files to game directories

But this still doesn't explain why Azuris can't boot the German version of FF IX via MiSTer.

well if he hasnt got the sbi.zip and isnt using a redump version of the game it does. The Main dev is German and I cant believe he and the other users of the core who speak German have missed such a major game being broken.

Looking back to the other thread he is referencing a collection that includes the sbi info. I think the core was tested on the Redump bin/cue or Redump CHD sets with sbi.zip providing the libcrypt bypass

The game works fine via PSX core. There is no discussion about it. He also tried the sbi files for the game (hopefully the right ones). He also said Breath of Fire IV PAL doesn't work neither. And this one isn't librcrypt protected. This game is fine too via PSX core.

so
1) remove all psx config files from /config
2) delete the core and redownload it
3) Obtain a redump image of the game
4) Ensure you have a proper set of bios images and the sbi.zip file
5) Perform all tests via HDMI to a HDMI device with nothing else in the display chain. No switches etc

So it did it, not sure if it was Part of the Solution, but after that i tested all the Files out i had meanwhile (different Sources).
Somehow, CD 3 from the "psx-redump-chd-libcrypt" worked, none of the others.

I tried around and nothing.

I redownloaded the other Discs, put it all in with the SBI and now it does.

I have no Clue why. Especially as i had also tested it on a fresh Mister Setup.
The other Files, also nicely provided from Users here that work on their Systems, don't work.

Netherless, thank you all very much for you big Help.

Converting the original Save File i gathered with Memcard Rex also worked very easy.

It sounds like you were missing this file in /mister/fat/games/PSX (since MiSTer ignores the protection data on my CHDs, unfortunately):

Code: Select all

rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 218953 May 12  2022 sbi.zip

It's VERY necessary for PAL-protected titles.
