MT-32pi Hat not work, MiSTer Digital I/O Digital Edition v1.2

Unread post by marcelosofth »

Hello friends, I built a MT-32pi Hat and bought a 10cm USB3.0 cable, but Mister doesn't recognize it, there's no image on the display and no sound, but the red light turns on and the green light blinks with activity on the Micro SD, I copied the Micro SD content of a friend that the MT-32pi Hat is working with it, what can it be? :?:

Might be a power issue. Try to power it with a micro usb cable.

I remember talking to an ebay seller who told me that not all usb cables work, it might be your cable.

Curious that I connected with a common long USB cable and the Mister doesn't recognize and doesn't come out sound, however the oled screen works perfectly.

This is the cable I bought:
https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/32867354335.html

This was the USB3.0 adapter:
https://shopee.com.br/Malka-Port%C3%A1t ... 3503915474

Ps.: I already connected a Micro USB cable to the Raspberry pi 3A+ input at the same time with a 5v 3a source but nothing happens, so it's not a power problem.

For the Data cable I found a short USB 3.0 Male to Male at 30mm
Some of these USB 3.0 gender adapters don't work right.

For you, I would look into something like this

It is my great regret that we live in an age that is proud of machines that think and suspicious of people who try to.

Baffled by the USB 3 Adaptor. The Digital IO port is not a USB 3 connector. It looks like one but it isnt one. You simply directly connect the MT32 Hat to the IO port using a short USB cable with no adaptor.

I'm connecting the cable to the blue USB above where it says "USER I/O" and it doesn't recognize and doesn't light up the display, but with another cable fulfilled 2.0 also doesn't recognize but the Oled screen lights up and the data loading from the sd card works!

The Pi when powered externally doesnt need the mister to work the display.

First thing to do is remove any cable to the Mister.
Power on the Pi, I cant remember which way round the switch on the MT32 Hat has to be for external power, So try both ways

if it doesnt work. Get a new SD card and put a standard Raspberry PI image on it. Power the Pi and verify that the Pi boots and an image is displayed over HDMi. You cant use the MT32 SD image as it doesnt display anything over HDMI

If the PI boots then its probably your MT32 Hat. Since you keep stating you built it that suggests you didnt build it correctly.

I would again get a new SD card and follow the steps in the Mt32 GitHub
https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi/wik ... tion#setup

make sure you edit the correct files.

Then reconnect the Hat and try again. If nothing is displayed the MT32 Pi Hat is broken.

Only if everything works can you move onto connecting it to the Mister.

Detailed photos of the actual Mt32 PI hat are needed of both sides. Also an exact statement of where you got it from and if you did indeed build it from components.

Also copies of the mt32-pi.cfg

Does your IO have the pins? (I had that problem!)

Thank you "FPGA64" for the explanation, and I already did a test on Raspiberry and it is loading the perfect linux system with desktop and image ok, the SD card I have 2 recorded the files of the "MT-32pi" and in both the red light turns on and the green flashes, including showing the entire boot on the Oled display, including the 2 buttons working by switching the ROM and Soundfonts, but this only happens using a large 2.0 cable, on my 3.0 short cable nothing happens on the display!

My suspicion was also in the assembly of the Hat that I bought here:
https://misterfpga.co.uk/product/mister-mt32-pi-pcb/

But if the Hat is faulty would the OLED screen work perfect showing all boot info, graphics bars and the 2 buttons working?

It's worth remembering that Mister doesn't recognize and there's no sound, but the Hat has the normal operation showing activity in the soundbars in the AO486 and X68000 cores, just no sound, but Hat is showing all functionality!

Misterfpga.co.uk is a quality supplier and its unlikely its faulty from him. If you can see the bars then the MT32PI is working fine and is recognised by the Mister. The Mister is sending it data and the Mt32 Pi is sending data back. Thats the only way the soundbars can be moving on the Mt32 Pi hat.

Did you just buy a PCB and then assemble it yourself ?

I would buy the recomended cable as specified in the Mt32 PI github. It appears you have purchased the wrong cable or been sent a faulty one from Ali Express.

As I told you, both the buttons, OLED boot and information, SD loading ok, the MT-32 is receiving information from Mister, but Mister is not receiving it back because there is no sound and it is not recognized, I will try another cable !

I bought the PCB and assembled it myself.

ps. I bought this short usb3.0 cable for testing!

Hallelujah, it worked perfectly, the villain was the USB 3.0 adapter, with this cable without using the Adapter it is working perfectly, thank you all!
