Acorn Atom core

Unread post by oldgit »

It would appear that many people have had a frustrating time with the new Atom core.
There is nothing wrong with the core, it was written by someone who knows what they are doing.
It can only be down to my implementation and the connection to the MiSTer framework.
I shall take steps to remove the core from the site until I can fix it.

Again Sorry

Hi Dave !

What's wrong with the core ?, it does WORK very well !

just need to create a FAT 12/16 image, put inside the Atom stuff and rename to VHD, that's all you have to do.

I will leave the core up for now as it works for some.
The interface should allow you to save and load files but this is not now working.
I will work on fixing this and it may fix the other problems.
With my old brain it may take a little while.

Regards Dave

Hey Dave!

The core is great, there is nothing to be sorry about! Apologies if I did not make it clear, but my intention was to offer help with troubleshooting, not to blame anyone or express my frustration.

After all the time I spent, I also believe FAT 12/16/32 may play the role. I am going to test different image formats and report.

And thank you very much, this is is a great core to play with!

NO es tan Facil ROn , parece ser que al montar el VHD no lo reconoce , por lo menos en mi caso y en el de muchos, es como que no reconoce el SD, cosa muy extraña....

What I can say is that it worked at first. At some point it stopped working and nothing I did could bring it back to life.
Something seems to be stored somewhere on MISTer:
At on point, in BBC mode I did *DIR, *CAT, *CAT TD.
After the problem arised and after deleting the rbf, vhd, hidden files in games/Acorn Atom, reinstalling the rbf and vhd the problem is still here. If I go in BBC mode and do *DIR, *CAT I still see the contents of the TD directory, even if the vhd is unmounted.

My apologies to everyone for the total misinformation I posted.
Stupidity has no limits.
I just revered FTPed my boot.vhd, mounted it under windows and surprise, surprise!!!!!!
My disk contains only the contents of the TD directory  .
At some point, while playing with the command line and not knowing how to *RUN a file from a sub-directory I created a new vhd file containing only the contents of the TD directory and I named it? You guess right: boot.vhd.
Since then, each time I ftp my boot disk I upload that disk.
Using the proper VHD the Atom is back to life.
I was right on one thing: something was stored on MISTer.
The Atom did not decay but my brain sure did.

@oldgit,
As you maybe have seen on the other post (How to config VHD for New Acorn Atom Core), it works also on my side now but still not by mounting the boot.vhd but by using the external µSD card :-)

So far the only problems encountered have to do with the keyboard. Sometimes a key-press does not register (typing "too fast"). The main problem is with the cursor keys: once pressed the down arrow repeat itself until I press the up arrow (may be any other key would work). I did not figure out what is the up arrow, Left Alt+Shift+6 does not work.

I do my testing on a small RPi keyboard the only error I have noticed is that if I press left cursor then repeat (right alt) the cursor goes right but pressing repeat first then left cursor woks. Perhaps I need to test another keyboard?
The Atom had a VERY slow keyboard and the code just copies this.
The atom had a separate up arrow (not a cursor up) Left Alt +Shift+6 just shifts the ^.
The Atom had two cursor keys, Up/Down - Right/Left press for up and Shift-press for down.
These keys I believe where mainly used in editing. Start the core and type TEST and hit return, ignore the error
Type 10P." (one, zero, P, full stop, quotes)
Use the cursor keys to move the cursor to the first letter of TEST and press Tab 4 times that is the copy key.
Type " (quotes) and hit return
Type LIST and hit return. Should show 10P."TEST" typing 20END and return then type RUN
P. is short for PRINT

I just formatted an 8Gb SD card with FAT32 and copied the AtomArchive folder and files. Placed this in the 2nd SD slot and it works. I can also save and load BASIC programs which you should be able to do on the boot.vhd but this is not working.
It must be the way I have coded the access to the VHD. Back to the drawing board.

I was convinced that Fat32 did not work but if I can get it working on the 2nd SD I should be able to get it to work on the Boot.vhd

Hey there, thank you for your work on this core.

If possible, can you fix the core that it can work on 15khz mode? As is, it seems to be scan doubled permanently. Thank you again for your work!

Great to have this Core in Main. Thanks
Will tape file support (TAP, UEF...) be added at some point?

I couldn't get the UEF to work on my first try.. I am not sure why. I couldn't load it as a wav over ADC either - I must be doing something wrong.
