SNAC for Commodore/Atari computers

Unread post by Bren McGuire »

I was thinking of buying a SNAC adapter but I read somewhere that the C64, Amiga and Atari ST cores don't support SNAC, is it true?

If this is the case, are there alternative solutions (possibly just as cheap) that would let me use Commodore/Atari joysticks with minimal latency?

Any Daemonbite that supports Atari Style Joysticks will do just fine. Its sub 1 m/s of lag

The General rule is Snac is only good for lightguns and obscure controllers. Its a pain to use as it cant control the menus.

Good thing that you can easily make one yourself for a couple of bucks because the pre-made ones are inexplicably expensive (40 Euros + shipping WTF?)

My MiSTer has a built-in keyboard, this is not a problem for me. So, it's confirmed that C64 and Amiga cores don't support SNAC?

I don't know all the details, but at least the C64 supports SNAC for hooking up to a real floppy drive. I don't know if it works with joysticks. I don't know what SNAC support for other devices the Amiga core provides. I just use my 2600daptor D9 that works for many different devices like Intellivision, Atari 2600 keypad, 2600 and 7800 joysticks, paddles, etc. Instead of a daemonbite, I recommend the D9. There is a D9 made just for paddles and the MiSTer, but I don't have that one and have no issues with the regular one.

I recommend the MiSTer Addons Reflex Adapt.

Works perfectly and low latency with C64/Amiga/Atari joysticks.

Like the DaemonBite adapters, it works in the menu, is cross-core compatible, has <1 ms added latency, etc. but unlike DaemonBite it also supports GunCon-1 and paddles.

Reflex Adapt also has a built-in display that's handy as a dutch uncle for joystick testing/input confirmation.

Good support/continually updated via Update All.

I sense you're looking for something a bit cheaper, but I find it good value.

EDIT: Out of stock atm, but re-stock in mid-December it says.

That one doesn't say anything about Intellivision, Atari paddles, Keypads or 7800 joystick support. I don't know if it supports them or not. The D9 supports pretty much anything with a 9 pin connector. According to https://rpubs.com/misteraddons/inputlatency the D9 has 1.704ms latency. Not bad.

You're right, the Daemonbite is good enough for me, especially considering that I can make one out of a 5 bucks Arduino.

i'm currently using a mayflash usb>db9 adapter, not sure how much lag it adds though..

That's the Daptor PDL, works well if you are experiencing paddle jitter caused by grounding problems.

Sadly the VIC-20 core (and IIRC the C64 core) doesn't support analog joystick axes as paddle input, only the MiSTer specific paddle adapter (and, from the top of my head, the SNAC adapters that use the AD board to handle paddle input).

I cant thing of any computer cores that have SNAC support.

I believe Minimig did have it but it was removed for MT32-pi support

There is nothing really to gain though, just use a Daemonbite for original sticks

Yeah, I'm doing that, I've already bough the Arduino.
