27" 1440p Monitor Recs?

Unread post by jdubs »

Hey All

Any recommendations for a 27" 1440p monitor that works with all (or most all?) cores using vsync=2?

The Gigabyte m27q looks pretty nice and is priced well...but not sure how well it does.

Any other options would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jim

I have the MSI MAG274QRF-QD. I bought it mostly as a nice upgrade for my computer with the hope that it would also work well on the MiSTer, and it's been great so far.

I can run it at 1920x1440@75Hz with no problem, and it seems to handle the refresh rate switching just fine between cores/regions. But I haven't extensively tested every core. I mostly stick to ao486, SNES, and Genesis, but I've also dabbled with a bunch of other cores a bit and I've yet to have a problem.

Another thing I love about it is that the stand can turn the screen 90 degrees to go from landscape to portrait, which is awesome for the vertical screen arcade cores. It's a bit cumbersome to do it, but I still think it's great. Although maybe I'm just easily impressed. :)

And for what it's worth, Hardware Unboxed calls it the only real option for a mid-range 1440p monitor because the balance between price and performance based on their testing. But that mostly matters if you plan to use it on your computer and not just as a screen for your MiSTer.

Anyway, I hope that helps. And in case you go for it, I found this custom video mode somewhere on this forum to get 1920x1440@75Hz to work for me: video_mode=1920,32,32,50,1440,4,5,26,225000

I have the closely related MSI G273QF and despite being a g-sync compatible 165hz display it is NOT very flexible on refresh rates with Mister. Slight variations on 60hz seem to be fine (including neo-geo), but 50hz is clamped to 60 and very jerky. You can feed it 100hz to try and smooth out your PAL games but this seems to clamp to 120hz. I should look carefully at 75hz but I'm suspicious that it's going to be clamping to 120hz again. Probably best to test with wonderswan rather than 486, like say scrolling in Final Fantasy.

Edit: I tested Wonderswan FF and scrolling is perfectly smooth in 75hz mode. That makes me more suspicious that the G273QF is just a cost reduced version of MAG274QRF as far as the scaler goes. Both should be great for ao486 style 70+ refresh rates, but PAL may be extremely jerky and laggy due to it converting incoming 50hz to 60hz display.

I have the Asus ProArt PA278QV that seems to accept everything I throw at it. It rotates in both directions which is nice. I've only had it for a month so I have not had the chance to test everything. So far, so good.

tvspelsdagboken I run a video game site (in Swedish)

I have a gsync capable Monster Aryond A32 and it accepts all refresh rates. With vsync_adjustment=2 it takes a moment to sync after a resolution change but it always gets the sync.
