You have access to create or fork repos in mister-devel if you'd like to put it there. It's better if you do it so you can manage changes to it.

I ran update_all but Congo Bongo wasn't downloaded. I saw a post on Twitter mentioned that it would be installed with the Insertcoin script. I checked the update_all settings but didn't find anything there for Insertcoin. Does anyone know if this script should be part of update_all and if not where I can download it?

If you read the post you will see that the core is not on the official repository, you have to download it yourself for the time being.
I also saw the mention of this coin script which does not make much sense. The core works like any other arcade core by defining a Coin button.

Yes I saw that but I also saw that Bosconian appeared in the "MiSTer updates and changelog" thread, I thought anything in that thread would be automatically picked up by the downloaders. I guess that's a bad assumption. Anyway no biggie, I can manually install this one for now

Hehe, well said - and while he's being there, he should change the setname tag to congo to follow up MAME's ROM names ;)

Thanks. Congo Bongo is now on MiSTer-devel (I hope so).

Hi darfpga,
Thank you for the core. I added a pull request where I fixed the setname for the MRA. Could you please verify?

I a pair of MiSTer today and got this message when botting CONGO BONGO - > (PIC)

That message is telling you either that the congo.zip file isn't in the name folder or that the zip file that you have is incorrect. Mame has both merged and unmerged rom sets. You want the full (merged) rom of the game.

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for adding this is really fun, I had been playing the SG-1000 version the other day that is 2D, didn't realise the arcade version was 3D isometric.

Be worth posting in the updates thread this core is out so it appears as a news update so more people know about it. :-)

Agreed. This is a pretty noteworthy title. It's Sega's ripoff of Donkey Kong.

Thank you for the release! I wish however that all fresh cores would implement the current sys framework as it stands.

I realize that work began way before most of the recent developments (such as 256 phase filters) came to be, but please take a look at what needs to be additionally coded, in order to take advantage of the latest features :)

lamarax - it sounds a simple request. I can tell you, implementing some of these features is FAR from simple. Especially since there is usually no explanatory documentation. There are some specialist core devs on here that are doing great work by taking cores and updating them with the latest features. That is another way.

Yes, I very well understand what you're saying. I don't mean to be pushy, just expressing a vague wish, seeing as iconic cores such as Pac-Man etc. are left behind.

I shouldn't be "dictating" what needs to be done, as I'm incapable myself of putting two & two together

Please add 'diagonal joystick' option when possible. Congo Bongo was a 4-way diagonal just like Q-bert.

Congo bongo use an 8 way digital joystick

No, it's 4-way.

Although, not sure how you would "add" 4-way in software, as this is a hardware issue - you can't magically make an 8-way joystick into 4-way via software.

Sorry, I mis-typed that...not exactly what I meant. Correct, not an 8-way joystick. I meant that its a 4-way offset to accept diagonal inputs just like Q-bert.

Q-bert in Mister, has a setting to isolate (digitally restrict an 8-way stick on the diagonals). Does that make more sense?

I have the same request. I am almost finished with my arcade cabinet, and don't want to have to have a rotated 4-way joystick control panel just for this one game. A core menu option to allow an 8-way joystick to control the 4 diagonal movement directions like what the Qbert core has is what I would like to see also.

Kind of. But surely, you are still doing a "click", even if software doesn't register it, so won't that give you a tiny bit of lag ?
I guess what I'm trying to say is, even if software ignores 4 directions, the joystick won't know this, and still registers the other 4 clicks which might introduce some ever-so slight lag because your joystick is still clicking on all 8 directions. If you had a restrictor gate, and rotated it to 4-way, you don't get any phantom clicks, you only get 4-way clicks. If that makes sense.

Sorry, I’m not sure where you’re getting that Congo Bongo was an 8-way digital joystick. It was a 4-way stick, rotated 45 degrees, and it recognized diagonal inputs (just like Q-Bert).

Since most people will not use a 4-way stick in that fashion, I’m requesting a software option, dip setting, whatever….be added to the core options so that a player can use a physical 8-way joystick, but the inputs are digitally restricted to only diagonal inputs. It works quite well in Q-Bert FPGA/Mister.

This made me realize that an interesting advantage of analog thumb sticks is, that they can be correctly configured as four-way, even diagonally.

I remembered that the control panel had 8 arrows so I thought it was 8 way.
Then I played again and yes it's 4 way ( I even have the pcb but really I didn't remember )
