japanese playstation games not loading

I was playing on the playstation core today, for the first time in several months (been out of town) and everything was fine, but I tried to load Pepsiman and the core flashed "unsafe option used" in the upper left, and the screen stayed black. Weird. I have played pepsiman many times last year. I tried other japanese games that had worked in the past and none of them load. I did update_all several times since I've been back and have been mostly playing the saturn core, but now I'm confused.

I tried setting the console to ntsc-j, but it didn't help.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or not doing to make these games work? All the US games I've tried work.

ok After searching and searching I found the problem. I just needed to set the system to NTSC-U instead of auto. This seems VERY counterintuitive for me. I thought I needed to set it at NTSC-J (like the saturn core) when I wanted to play japanese games. Why doesn't AUTO work?

Auto does work, as long as you have all 3 regions' bios files.

Oddly enough I just loaded Pepsiman up the other day and yeah, Auto worked fine for me.
